Revs See First Half End On Sour Note

The York Revolution saw a difficult first half come to a close on a sour note, losing to the Bridgeport Bluefish 3-2 on a walk-off double by Jonathan Galvez in the bottom of the ninth on Sunday evening at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard. The Revs will look to regroup when they start the second half of the season with a fresh slate, hosting the Lancaster Barnstormers in the first of a seven-game homestand on Friday night.

The story early on was pitching, as neither team registered a hit through the first five innings.

York lefty Frank Gailey faced the minimum through four no-hit innings in his first start. Gailey issued a leadoff walk to Josh Prince which he immediately erased on a double play, retiring each of his final 11 batters faced. Gailey has not allowed an earned run in 12.0 innings with York.

Bluefish starter Scott Maine issued a pair of walks and a hit batter over his first five innings, not allowing a hit until Salvador Paniagua led off the sixth with a bloop single to right-center. Wilson Valdez sacrificed Paniagua to second, but Maine retired the next two batters to keep the game scoreless.

The Revs blasted three balls to the fence in the top of the seventh but were unable to score. Bryan Pounds drove an opposite field shot to right that was run down by Welington Dotel for the first out. With two outs, Nick Ferdinand cracked a double off the fence in left-center. Brandon Boggs followed with a deep fly to center field, but Prince made a running grab on the track to deny the Revs again.

After a pair of scoreless innings in relief from Matt Neil, Revs pitchers still had not allowed a hit until Dotel legged out an infield single with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Dotel advanced to second on a delayed steal and took third on a throwing error by Paniagua. Reliever Tony Pena retired Galvez on a groundout to third with the infield in, but Jobduan Morales followed with a two-out single through the right side, scoring Dotel to give Bridgeport a 1-0 lead.

The Revs rallied to take the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth. Alfredo Patino led off with a bloop single to right against reliever Steven Ames and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Paniagua. Valdez then took a walk and Shannon Wilkerson followed with an RBI single to right, bringing Patino home to tie the game at 1-1. Ames struck out Eric Patterson for the second out, but Pounds slapped the first pitch he saw up the middle for a go-ahead RBI single, giving York a 2-1 lead.

Josh Judy fired a perfect bottom of the eighth to carry the lead into the ninth.

Stephen Penney retired Prince on a ground ball to third for a quick first out, but Matt Wessinger jumped on the first pitch for a single to left, and Dotel was then hit by a pitch to put two runners aboard. After a lengthy battle, Galvez elevated a 2-2 pitch to deep right-center and beyond the pursuit of Wilkerson and Boggs, landing on the warning track for a game-winning two-run double.

Notes: The 6.1-inning combined no-hit bid tied the longest no-hit bid in Revs history, along with a start made by Brett Tomko against Bridgeport on April 20, 2013. The Revs fall to 3-5 in walk-off decisions and 9-18 in games in which the lead changes hands. The loss is York's first of the season when leading after eight innings (19-1). The Revs finish the first half 24-46, matching the worst half in team history along with the 2009 first half. It is just their second losing half since the start of the 2011 season. York's series winless streak is extended to nine series (0-8-1), having dropped the final two in Bridgeport after winning Friday's opener. The Revs will start over with a 0-0 record in the second half opener on Friday night with first pitch against the Barnstormers set for 6:30 p.m. It is Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences Health Fair Night, and a Guaranteed Win Friday presented by Commonwealth Connections Academy.
