Memphis Redbirds News Release
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Redbirds offense was at it again on Sunday, plating seven runs after scoring a season-high 15 of Saturday. The Memphis pitching staff also stepped up, with the bullpen filling in after the late scratch of scheduled starting pitcher Tyler Lyons.
After the Sky Sox jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning, Memphis opened up their scoring in the top of the second. Jeremy Hazelbaker gave the Redbirds the lead after blasting a two-run home run, his first in a Memphis uniform. From there, the Redbirds would never look back. Rafael Ortega capped off the frame with an RBI double, scoring Dean Kiekhefer who was aboard after registering his first professional base hit.
The third inning saw more scoring from the Redbirds, with Dan Johnson collecting his ninth home run of the season, a solo shot to deep right field. The home run from Johnson was the first recorded on the road this season for the 35-year-old first baseman. Stephen Piscotty would score the second run of the frame for the Redbirds on a Matt Williams RBI fielder's choice.
Memphis would tack on another run in the fourth inning on a Stephen Piscotty RBI single and plate their seventh run of the contest in seventh after a Greg Garcia triple and Matt Williams single.
After scheduled starter Tyler Lyons was scratched just before game time, left-hander Dean Kiekhefer would be tabbed by manager Mike Shidlt to make his first start since 2010 when he was with Single-A Quad Cities. The 26-year-old southpaw allowed just one run over his 3.2 innings of work, scattering three hits while walking none and recording a strikeout.
Relievers Heath Wyatt, Justin Wright, and Keith Butler helped close out the game for the Redbirds, earning the club's second win in a row.
The Redbirds and Sky Sox continue their four-game series Monday from Security Service Field with left-hander Nick Greenwood (6-3, 5.72) getting the start for Memphis and righty Josh Roenicke (4-5, 4.75) toeing the rubber for Colorado Springs. First pitch is set for 8:05pm CT.
