Emeralds' Comeback Falls Short vs. Vancouver

July 5, 2015 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Eugene Emeralds News Release

EUGENE, Ore. "" The Eugene Emeralds scored twice in the bottom of the eighth but couldn't complete the comeback, falling to Vancouver, 5-4, on the Fourth of July in front of 5,172 fans at PK Park.

Eugene (9-8) has lost back-to-back games for the first time since the opening weekend of the season at Everett. Even with the loss, the Emeralds have won eight of their last 11 games and sit in first place in the Northwest League South Division standings.

Eugene took an early lead when Donnie Dewees hit a two-out single up the middle to score Ian Rice from second, who reached on a single to start the frame. The Ems took a 2-0 lead with another two-out single in the third, with Ho-young Son driving in Tyler Alamo.

Vancouver took away the lead in the fourth. The scoring started when Carl Wise singled in a run. The Canadians loaded the bases with one out in the frame, but Diaz struck out Kevin Garcia for the second out. Vancouver wasn't done, however, and scored the game-tying run on a bases loaded walk before an error by the third baseman allowed another run to score. Vancouver tacked on two more runs in the seventh inning on a RBI triple by Sean Hurley and a wild pitch.

The Ems cut into the lead with two runs in the eighth. Tyler Alamo started off the inning with a double down the line in left and came home on a single by Ian Rice. Rice then moved to second on a failed pick-off attempt and stole third. Ho-young Son rolled in an infield ground out to third but it was enough for Rice to slide home safe at home. Eugene loaded the bases with two outs later in the inning but a strikeout ended the threat.

Blake Headley hit a pinch hit single to start the ninth but he was stranded.
