Carolina Mudcats News Release

ZEBULON, NC - Max Povse allowed six earned runs on three hits while retiring just one out in the first and the Pelicans spoiled Carolina's Independence Day celebration by defeating the Mudcats 16-4 in front of a sellout crowd of 7,507 at Five County Stadium on Saturday night.

The Pelicans tagged Povse (L, 0-2, 22.85) and the Mudcats (39-40, 5-5) bullpen for 16 runs and 18 hits in the series opener. Both were season highs allowed by Carolina pitching this season. The game started with a :24 minute delay and took three hours and 13 minutes to play.

In his first home start, Povse walked a batter to start the game and then went on to allow three straight hits including doubles to Jeimer Candelario and Jacob Rogers. He eventually struck out Pin-Chieh, but had already allowed three runs in the inning. He left the game after walking Carlos Penalver to load the bases with one out in the first.

Candelario was 4-for-6 with three runs, three RBI and was a home run shy of the cycle on Saturday night for the visiting Pelicans (45-34, 4-6). Rogers was 3-for-6 with two runs, four RBI and a seventh inning home run that hit above the new short video board high above the right field wall.

Justin Jackson relieved Povse in the Myrtle half of the first and allowed all three inherited runners to score in the inning. He gave up RBI doubles to Daniel Lockhart and Trey Martin in the inning before getting the Mudcats out of it with a flyout and groundout. Jackson managed to retire eight straight after allowing Martin's double and finished with just two runs (one earned) allowed over a season high three and 1/3 innings pitched.

Myrtle Beach led 7-0 after one, but saw the Mudcats comeback a bit in the second against starter Jonathan Martinez. Keith Curcio ripped a RBI triple to right with the bases loaded in the Carolina second and brought the Mudcats within four at 7-3.

Curcio was 1-for-5 in the game with his triple and three RBI. The triple was his first with the Mudcats this season and came off Martinez who left after the second with three runs allowed over two innings pitched. Martinez was followed Michael Heesch (W, 5-0, 1.85) who eventually earned the win after keeping the Mudcats to a run and just two hits over the next four innings pitched.

Carolina used Jackson, Andy Otero, Mauricio Cabrera, Richie Tate and position player Sal Giardina in relief and out of the bullpen on Saturday night.

Otero and Cabrera allowed a combined eight runs on 12 hits over three innings pitched. Otero allowed four runs and six hits over one and 1/3 innings and Cabrera gave up four runs and six hits over an inning and 2/3. Cabrera gave up Rogers' seventh inning home run and doubles to both Chesny Young and Victor Caratini.

Tate kept the Pelicans scoreless and to just one hit while striking out two between the seventh and eighth innings. He also allowed one inherited runner to score. Carolina pitchers combined to allow six inherited runners to score in the loss.

Giardina started the game as the designated hitter and was 0-for-3 with a run and one scoreless inning pitched. He pitched the ninth and retired the side in order while also putting away two batters on comebackers back to the mound. His run came in the second on Curcio's triple that also scored Jose Briceno and Joey Meneses. Briceno was 2-for-4 with two runs in the loss and Meneses was 3-for-4.

The Pelicans used relievers Juan Paniagua and Jasvir Rakkar out of the bullpen in the win. Paniagua pitched two scoreless innings and struck out one. Rakkar worked a scoreless ninth and allowed one hit.
