Baby Bombers Drop Series Opener to Renegades, 3-1

With fireworks lighting up the New York City skyline, the Hudson Valley Renegades (8-7) defeated the Staten Island Yankees (9-7) by a score of 3-1, in front of a crowd of 6,836 at Richmond County Bank Ballpark on a beautiful Fourth of July evening.

The Renegades got on the board first in the fourth inning with a two out RBI single by Angel Moreno. Michael Russell scored on the hit.

The Yankees tied things up quickly in the bottom of the fifth inning when Griffin Gordon drove home Thairo Estrada for his sixth run batted in of the season.

Hudson Valley's first basemen, Nic Wilson, hit his first home run of the season to help the Renegades regain the lead at 2-1 in the seventh inning. It was a towering shot that cleared the right-centerfield scoreboard.

Manny Sanchez tacked on an insurance run for the Renegades in the top of the eighth inning, when he drove home Oscar Sanay on a sacrifice fly to centerfield.

Renegades' starting pitcher Roel Ramirez continued his early season dominance. He went 4.2 innings, giving up only five hits, surrendering one unearned run, walking three, and striking out one in a no decision. Ramirez lowered his season ERA to 1.15.

Brad Wallace replaced Ramirez and went on to dominate Yankee bats for the remaining 4.1 innings of the game. Wallace allowed only three base runners and did not give up a run, while striking out six batters. He improved to 2-0 with the win.

Getting the start for the Yankees, Domingo Acevedo went a strong five innings, allowing only three hits, one run, one walk, while striking out seven. He did not factor into the decision.

Bret Marks was the losing pitcher out of the pen for the Yankees. He gave up the decisive home run to Wilson in the seventh inning. Marks went 2.1 innings, giving up three hits, two earned runs, walked one, and struck out three. He fell to 0-1 in the loss.

Michael Schaub pitched 1.2 innings of shutout ball, walking one, as well as striking out one to finish the game for the Yankees. Schaub has yet to allow a run this season.

Jose Paez was the only player on the Renegades to collect two hits on Saturday night. Russell hit the only double for Hudson Valley, his fourth of the season. Moreno and Sanay each recorded a single. Jake Cronenworth stole his second base of the season.

Jake Hernandez totaled two singles while Jeff Hendrix, Jhalan Jackson and Gordon all had a single apiece. Kyle Holder had the only extra base hit for the Yankees with a double.

The two teams will play in game two of their three game series tomorrow, Sunday, July 5, at 4 p.m. in Staten Island. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
