Washington Wild Things News Release

WASHINGTON, PA- The Washington Wild Things split their July 4th doubleheader against the Joliet Slammers on Saturday. While the Slammers were able to come out victorious in the resumed contest from Friday, July 3 by a final score of 11-4, the Wild Things knotted the series with a 2-1 game two victory.

In game one, the Wild Things started strong with a four hit first inning highlighted by a Sam Mende solo homer, his fifth of the season giving them the 1-0 lead before inclement weather forced the game to be suspended until 4:35 p.m. this afternoon. The Slammers responded plating two runs in the second and five in the third. The Wild Things answered with a four hit, three run bottom of the third with Carter Bell and Matt Peters collecting an RBI each for 7-4 score.

Washington reliever Tyler Ferguson tossed four shutout innings, extending his scoreless streak to 14 innings. He has yet to allow an earned run since joining the Wild Things from La Roche College.

The Slammers added four more runs, one in the top of the eighth and three in the ninth, to take the first game of the doubleheader with a final score of 11-4.

The Wild Things took the second game of the doubleheader winning 2-1. Steve Messner received the win for Washington while Kevin McNorton took the loss for Joliet.

The Slammers got off to an early 1-0 lead off Matt Sergey in the top of the first thanks to an RBI triple by Joliet third baseman Matt Garza. Garza had himself a holiday, going 6-9 with 6 RBI through two games.

The Wild Things responded in the bottom of the fourth when left fielder Andrew Heck hit an RBI single to right field scoring Max Garrett and tying the game at one a piece.

Washington starter Matt Sergey was dominant on Saturday night as he struck six batters over five innings of work giving up only one run, he allowed only 2 runners on base all night.

Garrett delivered in the bottom of the sixth blasting his first home run of the year, a solo shot, to give the Wild Things a 2-1 lead. That was all Washington needed as they would go on to win with a final score of 2-1.
