North Bay Battalion News Release

NORTH BAY, Ont. - With the calendar having turned to July, one former and one future North Bay Battalion defenceman took significant steps forward.

The Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League announced Friday that they have signed Brenden Miller, a Battalion overager last season, to a contract.

On Thursday, Cam Dineen was named to the under-18 United States team that will take part in the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament from Aug. 10-15 in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Miller, a six-foot-one, 190-pound native of Orangeville, Ont., played four-plus Ontario Hockey League seasons with the Battalion in Brampton and North Bay, scoring 37 goals and earning 92 assists for 129 points in 248 games with 286 penalty minutes. His goals and points totals are the highest by a defenceman in franchise history.

Miller, who turned 21 on March 29, went unclaimed in National Hockey League drafts but now has signed as a free agent with the Toronto Maple Leafs' AHL affiliate. The Battalion chose him in the eighth round of the 2010 OHL Priority Selection from the York-Simcoe Express minor midgets.

Dineen, whose signing with North Bay was announced June 11, is one of five OHLers named to the U.S. entry to the eight-team Ivan Hlinka tournament, in which Stan Butler, Battalion director of hockey operations and head coach, will serve as Canada's head coach.

Dineen, a product of Toms River, N.J., who turned 17 on June 19, shone at the U.S. selection camp at Williamsville, N.Y., at which a 22-player roster was chosen.

"He was outstanding at their camp," said Butler. "I told him I'll see him in the Czech Republic."

The Battalion tabbed Dineen, six feet and 176 pounds, in the 11th round of the 2014 OHL Priority Selection from the New Jersey Rockets midgets. He played last season with the Rockets' Eastern Hockey League entry, also seeing time with the Tri-City Storm of the United States Hockey League.

The other OHLers on the U.S. team are goaltender Stephen Dhillon of the Niagara IceDogs, defenceman Benjamin Gleason of the London Knights and forwards Tim Gettinger of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds and Drake Rymsha of London.
