Anchors can't overcome on Independence Day

Alexandria Blue Anchors News Release


Duluth, Minn. - The Alexandria Blue Anchors fell to the Duluth Huskies Saturday afternoon by a score of 7-4 at Wade Stadium. The Blue Anchors are now 2-2 in the second half of the season and 14-25 of the season.

In the bottom of the second, Duluth got on board against Tom Watson. Alex Wojciechowski singled to start the inning and went to third on Evan Barzilli's base hit. A sacrifice fly by Colton Waltner scored Wojciechowski to put the Huskies up 1-0.

The third inning went even better for Duluth. Matt McLaughlin walked and went to second on Danny Lee's' hit. A sac bunt moved both into scoring position. Alex Greene doubled in both runners to make the score 3-0. Greene eventually advanced to third and would come in to score on a balk pushing the Huskies' lead to 4-0.

The Blue Anchors made a run starting in the top of the seventh. Nehwon Norkeh and Anthony Mrosla walked with two outs. Ben Allen doubled both of those runners in to cut the deficit to 4-2.

The Huskies responded quickly in their half of the seventh. TJ Martin led off with a walk and runners were on the corners after McLaughlin singled. Lee would walk to load the bases with no outs. Cal Stevenson singled in Martin and Greene brought home McLaughlin making the score 6-2. With two outs, Wojciechowski singled in Greene putting the Huskies up five, 7-2.

The eighth inning brought one last rally for the Anchors. Drew Fearing was hit by a one-out pitch and he went to second on Josh Merrigan's single. Matt Hopfner was hit by a pitch to load the bases. After a pitching change, Kyle Richardson singled to score Fearing and Merrigan but it wasn't enough as they fell 7-4.

Taking the loss was Watson (1-2). He pitched seven innings allowing seven runs on 11 hits and two walks. Josh Baumgart finished off the game with a scoreless eighth.

Minnesota Baseball Academy Player of the Game - Ben Allen (3B) - The Blue Anchors utility player has been hitting well this past week. He finished the game 1-for-2 with two RBI and two walks. His average this season is now .290.
