Coyotes Sign Derek Smith to One-Year Contract

Springfield, MA - Arizona Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney announced today that the Coyotes have signed defenseman Derek Smith to a one year, two-way contract. As per Club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed. Last season, the 6-foot-1, 200-pound Smith played 25 games with Zurich in the Swiss League, collecting 3-2-5 and 4 penalty minutes. The 30-year-old native of Belleville, Ontario has played 94 career NHL games with the Ottawa Senators and Calgary Flames, registering 2-12-14 and 24 penalty minutes. In 2011-12, Smith played in a career high 47 games with the Flames, collecting 2-9-11 and 12 penalty minutes. He has collected 40-126-166 and 314 penalty minutes in 304 career AHL games with the Binghamton Senators and the Abbotsford Heat.
