Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CA - Rancho Cucamonga and High Desert traded late-inning offensive fireworks on Friday night, but the Quakes fell 5-4 in ten innings in front of a sold-out crowd at LoanMart Field on Friday evening.

With the game tied 4-4, the Mavericks (3-5, 40-37) pushed across a run in the top of the tenth against Quakes' reliever Karch Kowalczyk (0-1). Tripp Martin drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Seth Spivey pushed a double down the left field line, scoring Martin for a 5-4 advantage.

The Quakes (5-3, 46-32) had a chance to tie in the bottom of the tenth against reliever John Fasola. Paul Hoenecke lined a one-out double to right field and was replaced by pinch-runner Jacob Scavuzzo. Tyler Ogle struck out swinging, bringing Joey Curletta to the plate. During the at-bat, Scavuzzo got caught too far off of second base, resulting in a rundown and a tag-out to end the game and give Fasola his second save of the season.

Rancho Cucamonga had a chance to win in the bottom of the ninth against Mavericks' reliever Ryne Slack (5-1). Travis Witherspoon's line drive to center field was dropped by Lewis Brinson, resulting in a two-base error. An infield single by Tim Locastro placed runners at the corners with two outs, but Slack struck out Cody Bellinger to end the inning and force extras.

The maximum-capacity crowd of 4,902 cheered a furious Quakes' rally in the seventh inning to even the contest. Trailing 3-1 against High Desert starter David Ledbetter, Hoenecke led off the frame with a single. Tyler Ogle singled, placing runners at first and second. Curletta doubled to the left field corner, plating Hoenecke. Ogle was cut down at the plate on the relay throw, keeping it a 3-2 score. After Curletta advanced to third on a wild pitch by reliever Anyelo Leclerc, Webster Rivas singled past the drawn-in infield to knot the game at 3-3.

High Desert bounced back in the top of the eighth against reliever Rob Rogers. Ronald Guzman drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. Martin singled to center field, but Johan Mieses threw out Guzman at the plate with a strong throw. Spivey doubled to the left-center field gap, chasing Martin home to give the visitors a 4-3 edge.

The see-saw battle continued in the bottom of the eighth. Locastro was hit by a pitch from Leclerc. Slack entered from the bullpen, giving up a single to Bellinger and a walk to Brandon Dixon, loading the bases. With one out, Ogle grounded out to second base, but Locastro hustled home to tie the game once again at 4-4.

The Mavericks initially grabbed the upper-hand in the third inning against Rancho Cucamonga starter John Richy. Brinson singled and stole second base. Alberto Triunfel singled, placing runners at the corners. Royce Bolinger singled to left field, scoring Brinson for a 1-0 lead.

High Desert padded their margin against Richy in the fifth. Isiah Kiner-Falefa opened the inning with a single and scored on Triunfel's triple to left. Joe Jackson chased Triunfel home with a sacrifice fly to right field, pushing the score to 3-0.

The Quakes got on the board against Ledbetter in the bottom of the fifth. Ogle singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. Travis Witherspoon's single up the middle plated Ogle, trimming the deficit to 3-1 and setting the stage for the late-inning drama.

The loss snaps a five-game extra-inning winning streak for the Quakes, falling to 5-3 this season in games that need additional time.

Rancho Cucamonga will hit the road for the holiday weekend, visiting Inland Empire in the opener of a three-game series on Saturday. The Quakes will send left-hander Luis De Paula (0-0, 4.38 ERA) to the mound, while the 66ers counter with right-hander Victor Alcantara (3-5, 4.93 ERA).
