Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
SIOUX CITY, IA - The battle of Interstate 29 was everything short of a rivalry type game as Sioux City (29-12) took game one from Sioux Falls (18-22) at Lewis and Clark Park by a final of 12-1.
Sioux Falls starter Joe Bircher (2-3, 3.80 ERA) got off to a rocky start by allowing four earned runs on six hits through 2 1/3 innings of work. The early departure gave way to relief pitcher Tyler Pearson. Pearson tossed three innings on four earned runs while giving up four hits. Sioux City scored a game high, four runs in the bottom of the sixth as they sent nine hitters to the plate. Birds' lefty relief pitcher Mike Watt threw the final 2 2/3 innings while giving up six hits on three earned runs.
Ryan Court picked up three hits for Sioux City, and every Sioux City batter except Matty Johnson and Brock Kjeldgaard had two hits in the contest.
Patrick Johnson (5-0, 2.60 ERA) pitched a complete game for Sioux City as he allowed only four hits on one earned run while striking out ten Canaries batters.
The Canaries bats were totally opposite as Jerome Pena went 2-for-4 and Jason Repko was 1-for-3 as well as Richard Stock. The Birds' picked up their only run in the top of the fourth when Richard Stock hit an RBI single to score Jerome Pena.
Sioux Falls will send Miguel Pena (5-2, 2.57 ERA) to the mound in search of his team leading sixth win in a Canaries uniform. Tune into AM 1230 and FM 98.1 KWSN as the "Voice of the Canaries" JJ Hartigan will bring you live coverage from Lewis and Clark Park beginning at 6:45 PM.
