RallyDogs Head Home Happy, End Trip with 5-3 Comeback Win

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The Charleston RiverDogs trailed the Asheville Tourists by a run heading to the ninth, but loaded the bases, plated three runs in the frame and stole a 5-3 win in the series finale, Friday night at McCormick Field.

Bo Thompson drew a walk against the new pitcher James Lomangino to begin the ninth for Charleston (4-5 second half, 38-41 overall) and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Rainiero Coa. Jerad McCrummen (2-1) entered the game to replace Lomangino and could not get the Tourists (6-3, 38-41) out of the jam.

Derek Toadvine and Jorge Mateo hit back-to-back singles to load the bases. Thompson scored the tying run on an RBI ground out by Austin Aune and Chris Breen belted a single to right that plated both Toadvine and the speedy Mateo and upped the RiverDogs lead to 5-3.

Caleb Frare (4-1) worked around a two-out single by Luis Jean and retired the side in the bottom of the ninth to preserve the victory. Frare and Philip Walby both pitched two scoreless innings of relief.

The RiverDogs struck first when Thompson extended his hitting streak to six games with an RBI single in the top of the second. Vince Conde, who hit a double earlier in the inning, came home to score the first run of the game. The RiverDogs scored the first run in all four games during the series.

The Tourists responded in the bottom of the fourth as Ryan Stephens, one of the recent roster additions, hit a two-run home run in his second game with Asheville to put the home team in front 2-1.

Charleston wasted no time tying the game, as they answered back in the top of the fifth. Mateo singled and advanced all the way to third on a throwing error by the shortstop Jean. Aune followed with a walk and then Breen singled in Mateo, one of his three RBIs on the night, to tie the game 2-2.

Asheville took the lead back in the sixth when Josh Fuentes scored on a double play. But the Tourists only mustered one hit against the RiverDogs' bullpen, which came on Jean's base hit with two outs in the ninth inning.
