Winston-Salem Dash News Release

ZEBULON, N.C. (July 3, 2015) - Dash starter Robinson Leyer scattered four hits over seven shutout innings in Winston-Salem's 2-1 victory over the Carolina Mudcats on Friday night at Five County Stadium.

Leyer (3-6) faced just six more than the minimum and punched out six Mudcats while tying a season-high in innings pitched. The pride of El Seibo, Dominican Republic, only allowed two runners to reach scoring position.

Behind Leyer's stellar outing, Peter Tago tossed a hitless eighth before running into a bit of trouble in the ninth. Carolina's Carlos Franco kicked off the frame with a double. Following a strikeout of Jose Briceno and a walk to Joey Meneses, Tago uncorked a wild pitch that allowed both runners to advance two stations and put the Mudcats on the board.

Undeterred, Tago struck out Tanner Krietemeier and induced a Reed Harper groundout to strand the potential tying run at third base. In the process, Tago logged his team-leading sixth save. Winston-Salem has converted on nine of its last 10 save opportunities.

The Dash's offense mustered just enough production to collect the sweep-avoiding victory. With two down and nobody aboard in the second, Toby Thomas singled, and he scored on a T.J. Williams off the base of the wall in right field.

Winston-Salem (5-3, 35-43) tacked on another run in the sixth. Jake Peter, who posted his team-leading 21st multi-hit game, doubled to begin the inning. He came around on a Keon Barnum two-bagger to left-center.

Since May 27, Peter has hit safely in 31 of his 33 games. He is currently riding an 11-game hit streak, the second-longest by a Winston hitter in 2015. Only Peter's 14-game surge in June is longer.

Other than those two tallies, Carolina (5-4, 39-39) starter Seth Webster (3-5) was strong over a season-high eight innings. He struck out five and permitted seven hits in a tough-luck loss.

The Dash, in sole possession of first place in the Southern Division's second half standings, return home for a three-game series against the Frederick Keys, which begins with Saturday's Fourth of July extravaganza. All-Star Matt Heidenreich (8-2, 2.68 ERA), the league's leader in victories, toes the rubber for the Dash. Frederick has yet to announce its starting hurler. Pregame coverage begins at 6:15 p.m. on wsdash.com/broadcast and the TuneIn App.

A limited number of tickets are available for Saturday's 6:30 p.m. game. They can be purchased by calling (336) 714-2287 or visiting wsdash.com/broadcast. Fans are encouraged to arrive early, as a capacity crowd is expected. A year ago, the Dash set a BB&T Ballpark-record with 8,184 fans at their Fourth of July game.
