July 3, 2015 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Madison Mallards News Release

Madison, Wis. - Tonight, field manager Donnie Scott and the Madison Mallards (1-1, 21-16) will conclude their three-game home-stand to open up the second half of the 2015 season against the Wisconsin Woodchucks (2-0, 14-23) at the Duck Pond. Friday will feature Northside Independence Day Fireworks at Warner Park and include entertainment by the Kissers and the Madison Music Foundry. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 p.m.

Last night, the Mallards captured their first victory of the second half by a 7-4 mark over the Kalamazoo Growlers. Jason Goldstein (Illinois), who went 2-for-5 with a home run, and Tony Butler (Madison College), who drove in a game-high four runs, led Madison's offense in the win. Logan Browning (Florida) tabbed a shutout appearance from Scott's bullpen, while Vince Arobio (Pacific) logged 1.1 innings of scoreless relief en route to his third save of the summer.

"He runs the show out there and that's the kind of guy I like," Scott said of Goldstein, who with his 2-for-5 batting line on Thursday lifted his slugging percentage to .548. "Sometimes people don't understand it, but that's his job out there: He's the quarterback of the field, and he does an outstanding job of it...He (Butler) is getting more aggressive every day (at the plate) and more confident out there. He had a few great plays at short tonight, too."

After watching Dalton D'Spain (Texas A&M Corpus Christi) record his team-leading fourth winning decision of the summer last night, the Mallards will turn to A.J. Bogucki (North Carolina) to start tonight's contest. Bogucki, a 6-foot-3 right hander from Gilbertsville, Penn., is 1-3 with a 4.73 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 15:5 strikeout-to-walk ratio thus far. He stomached a loss for his June 25 outing at Kenosha, ceding three earned runs across 4.2 innings.

To counter, the Woodchucks will turn to right-handed pitcher Simon Mathews (Connecticut) to tab his sixth start of the summer. The 6-foot-2 native of West Haven, Conn., enters tonight's contest on the heels of a five-inning shutout performance June 27 at La Crosse, one in which he struck out six, walked one and allowed three hits. Overall, Mathews is 2-2 with a 3.85 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 16:3 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 28 total frames of work this season.

Starting off Strong - After helping the University of Virginia capture the College World Series championship as a freshman this spring, Charlie Cody has begun his Mallards career on a strong note, going 4-for-7 (.571) with three runs scored, two walks and just one strikeout across his first two games.

Butler Back on Track - Following an uncharacteristically slow start to the 2015 season at the dish, Mallards shortstop Tony Butler has swung one of the league's hottest bats of late, going 10-for-22 (.455) with three runs scored and six runs batted in across his last seven games. His season average now stands at .247 (89 AB).
