Stockton Ports News Release

STOCKTON, Calif. - Angel Villalona rejoined the San Jose Giants prior to their series with the Stockton Ports and he made his presence felt on Thursday night at Banner Island Ballpark. Villalona hit a pair of home runs and Christian Arroyo added a two-run blast as the Ports dropped the third game of their four-game series with the Giants by a final of 7-3.

The Giants opened the scoring in the first inning on a two-out RBI single by Ryder Jones off Ports starter Kyle Finnegan (5-5) to take the initial 1-0 lead. After Finnegan pitched around a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the second, Villalona led off the third with the first of his two home runs to left to make it a 2-0 Giants advantage. Finnegan went on to have runners at second and third with nobody out in the inning, but escaped further trouble with back-to-back strikeouts of Brian Ragira and Ty Ross.

Finnegan suffered the loss, going three innings and allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out four.

Giant starter Ray Black dominated the Ports in his two-and-two-thirds scoreless innings of work. Black did not factor into the decision but allowed just one hit and struck out six while walking two.

Tyler Rogers (2-1) took over for Black and went on to earn the win, pitching two-and-a-third scoreless innings while not allowing a hit and walking one.

Trevor Bayless took over for Finnegan to begin the fourth and retired eight of the first nine batters he faced. With two outs in the sixth, Bayless issued a walk to Seth Harrison and then a two-run homer to Arroyo that pushed the Giants lead to 4-0. Those were the only runs allowed by Bayless in 2.2 innings of relief.

Phil Coke came on and recorded the final out of the sixth for Stockton. In the eighth, Coke gave up a one-out triple to Daniel Carbonell and two batters later, a sac-fly to Ty Ross that put the Giants up 5-0.

Stockton's first two runs of the game came in the seventh with Giants reliever Ian Gardeck on the mound. John Nogowski led off with a single to right and Matt Chapman followed with a two-run homer to right to cut the Giants lead to 5-2. They were the only runs allowed by Gardeck in two innings of relief.

San Jose got the two runs back in the eighth. Jeff Kobernus reached on an infield single with one out and Villalona followed with a two-run homer to left to run the score to 7-2. They were the final runs allowed by Coke as he allowed five hits in two-and-a-third innings of work.

Stockton's final run came in the ninth off Giants reliever Jake Smith. Chapman drew a walk to open the inning and Tyler Marincov doubled to left-center to score Chapman and make it a 7-3 game. It was the only run allowed by Smith in two innings of relief.

The Ports and Giants play the finale of their four-game set on Friday night at Banner Island Ballpark. Raul Alcantara (0-0, 5.25 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by San Jose right-hander Martin Agosta (2-5, 5.53 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. PDT.
