Hawks Hold On to Win Nail Biter

Boise, Idaho - In a back-and-forth affair, the Boise Hawks came out victorious against the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes by a score of 6-4 on Thursday night.

With the Hawks leading 1-0, Kevin Padlo reached on a one-out error in the bottom of the fourth inning. Hamlet Marte moved Padlo to third with a single before Brian Mundell drove him home, slapping an RBI single to right field on a hit-and-run that give the Hawks a 2-0 advantage.

The Volcanoes responded by scoring two unearned runs off Hawks starting pitcher, Angel Lezama to tie the game at 2-2.

Lezama went six solid innings, giving up three runs (none of them earned) on seven hits with a walk and a strikeout.

The Volcanoes grabbed one run on a fielder's choice RBI in the top of the sixth before the Hawks retook the lead in the bottom half of the inning. Terry McClure ripped a first-pitch leadoff double down the left field line off Volcanoes reliever, Jarret Leverett. Yonathan Daza followed, slapping an RBI single into right field before Padlo rocketed an RBI triple deep into the left center field gap to give the Hawks a lead at 4-3.

Leverett took the loss for the Volcanoes, pitching two and one third of an inning while giving up two runs on two hits with three strikeouts.

The Volcanoes battled back once again to tie the game at 4-4 in the eighth inning on a towering solo home run off the bat of first baseman, Chris Shaw.

Salvador Justo picked up the win for the Hawks, pitching one inning and giving up one run, the solo homerun to Shaw, on two hits.

Looking to break a three game losing streak, Daza got things started in the bottom of the eighth with a one out single. Padlo followed with a four-pitch walk before Marte delivered a double over the third base bag and down the left field line giving the Hawks a one run lead. Mundell added an RBI sacrifice fly to make the score 6-4.

Taylor Black pitched the ninth inning and picked up his second save of the season as the Hawks (6-9) grabbed game two of this three game series. The rubber match will be tomorrow night at 7:15 p.m.

Notes: The Hawks remain undefeated this season when wearing their purple uniforms... Yonathan Daza continues to impress at the plate, raising his league best batting average to .404.
