The Thunder offense banged out 14 hits on their way to an 11-3 victory over the Altoona Curve on Thursday night at ARM & HAMMER Park.
Trailing 2-1, the Thunder scored six times in the bottom of the fourth inning to break the game open. Jose Rosario (3-for-3, 4 RBI, HBP) drove in a pair with a two-run single. After a sacrifice fly by Jake Cave and an RBI single by Ali Castillo, Greg Bird capped off the inning with a two-run home run. It was Bird's sixth home run of the season and over his last six games is batting 9-for-22 (.409) with six walks, a home run and five RBI.
The bottom four batters in the Thunder order (Tony Renda, Danny Oh, Cito Culver and Jose Rosario) combined to go 9-for-15 with eight runs scored and five RBI.
LHP Caleb Smith set a season-high with seven strikeouts as he turned in his fourth quality start of the season with six innings of three-run ball. RHP Geoff DeGroot threw two shutout innings of relief in his Eastern League debut allowing two hits and one walk, he struck out two. Former two-time American League All-Star closer Andrew Bailey finished the victory on the mound with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
Thursday was the first game this season in which no Thunder batter struck out. Every Thunder starter except for Gary Sanchez recorded a hit in the game and the team set a season-high with 11 runs scored in a home game.
With the victory the Thunder have won six of their last eight games and hold sole possession of first place in the Eastern League's East Division.
