Connecticut Scores Six in Second and Win Fifth Straight

LOWELL, MA-The Connecticut Tigers (7-6) won their fifth game in a row on Thursday night as they defeated the Lowell Spinners (10-4) at LeLacheur Park 11-2.

Connecticut has collected double digit hits in the last five games. They have gone from 2-6 through the first eight games to just 2.5 games out of first place in the Stedler Division.

The Tigers, leading 1-0, broke the game open in the second with six runs. It was the second straight night the Lowell starter struggled. Tonight it was Jake Cosart (0-1) who lasted just an inning and a third as he gave up seven runs on four hits.

First basemen Corey Baptist started the inning with a walk and scored on a single by right fielder Tanner Donnels (2-4, 2 R, RBI). After a walk to catcher Tyler Servais the bases were loaded for center fielder Cam Gibson who for the second straight night homered. This time it was a grand slam making it 6-0 Tigers. Connecticut tacked another run on in the inning after a Brett Pirtle (2-4, 2 R, 2 RBI, 2 3B) triple and Christin Stewart (2-5, HR, 2 RBI) RBI single.

Connecticut continued to add to their lead scoring three in the fourth and one more in the seventh. Pirtle's two run triple was the big hit in the three run fourth.

Lefthander Tyler Alexander, a 2015 second round pick by Detroit out of TCU, got the start and was strong. Alexander ended up going four innings allowing just one hit and striking out three. Andres Tejada was the first man out of the pen working two scoreless innings. Jake Shull (1-0) went two innings picking up the win and Jack Fischer pitched the final inning to close the game.

Connecticut will return home tomorrow and host Lowell in the final game of the three game series. First pitch tomorrow night is set for 7:05.
