Swamp Bats Blow out Gulls 16-0

The fireworks came a night early to Alumni Field on Thursday night as the Swamp Bats blew out the Newport Gulls by a score of 16-0, and would split the season series 1-1.

Four home runs for the Swamp Bats and five errors for the Gulls led to an explosive night for Keene.

Keene struck first in the bottom of the third inning on a three run home run by Anthony Brocato, his second home run of the season, and the Swamp Bats had a 3-0 lead after three innings.

The Swamp Bats then exploded for five more runs in the fourth inning, as they would plate five runners on three hits and two errors. A single by Brad Witkowski that lead to an error by center fielder John Littel scored Connor Fitzsimons to make it 4-0. Lucas Luopa then hit an RBI single to extend the lead to 5-0. Garrett Christman came to the plate and launched a two run home run over the right field fence and the Swamp Bats led 8-0 after four innings.

They weren't done there. After a one run bottom of the sixth inning Keene poured on seven more runs in the seventh, capped off by a Ryan Karl pinch hit grand slam and the Swamp Bats would run away with their 16-0 lead.

Keene's starting pitcher Kyle Gauthier's day would be done after five innings pitched, allowing six hits and no runs and would get the win for the Swamp Bats. The rest of the pitching staff would keep the Gulls off the board for the remainder of the game.

The Bats' improve to 5-16 as they reach the midpoint of the season.

The Swamp Bats are back home again Friday night for their Independence Eve game against the Sanford Mainers. Doors open at 4:30, with first pitch at 6:30 and fireworks after the game.
