Youngstown Phantoms News Release

YOUNGSTOWN, OH- The Youngstown Phantoms have promoted Jason Koehler to General Manager. Koehler has served as the Phantoms Assistant General Manager and Director of Player Personnel since the 2009-10 season. His first task will be replacing former head coach Anthony Noreen, who was named head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs ECHL affiliate, the Orland Solar Bears.

"I'm excited for this, but really, nothing changes from what we've done before. Our hockey operations staff is one of the best I've ever worked with in my entire career. The next step is to find an outstanding head coach. We have an excellent roster and group of players, we just need someone to lead them," Koehler said.

Koehler will be involved in all aspects of the Phantoms day-to-day hockey operations, including player personnel matters such as scouting, recruiting, drafts, trades, and the Phantoms tryout camp.

"I've been fortunate to be with this organization since its USHL inception, and I'm very thankful to the Loney family and Bruce Zoldan for the opportunity here," Koehler added.

A native of Prospect, Pa., Koehler began his career with the NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins, working as a coaching assistant to then head coach Kevin Constantine for two seasons. He also briefly worked with then general manager Craig Patrick, focusing on player contracts and arbitration issues in the offseason.

Koehler gained valuable experience in the junior hockey ranks with the now-defunct Pittsburgh Forge. At the young age of 24, he helped lead the Forge to a Robertson Cup Tournament championship in 2002-03, just one year after the franchise's inaugural season. Koehler also helped guide the Mahoning Valley Phantoms into the North American Hockey League, where they would play until moving to the United States Hockey League and becoming the Youngstown Phantoms in 2009.

Koehler has also worked with the USHL's Sioux Falls Stampede as the assistant general manager, and with the Chicago Steel, where he served as the general manager. A year before rejoining the Phantoms in 2009, Koehler served as the United States scout for the Saginaw Spirit of the Ontario Hockey League.

"We are very fortunate to have Jason as our general manager. His continued dedication and commitment to finding players that fit our organization's culture, and for building character individuals through the sport of hockey is impressive. His vision for the Phantoms started years ago with the building of talent through countless hours in hockey rinks across the United States and Canada. This year was an exceptional year for Jason cumulating with the team having seven players with Youngstown Phantoms ties being selected in the NHL draft. We have full confidence Jason will continue to provide our team with the talent needed for years of continued success," said Phantoms Co-owners Troy and Aafke Loney.

In his 13 years of Junior Hockey experience, Koehler has acquired more than 200 NCAA Division 1 college hockey players, and has had more than 40 NHL Draft picks on his rosters.
