SWB Game Notes
July 2, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
SWEPT AWAY: Russ Canzler singled over shortstop with a drawn-in infield to plate Tyler Henson from third base and the RailRiders lost in 10 innings and walk-off fashion to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs at Coca-Cola Park last night, 3-2. SWB left 15 men on base and went 2-for-14 with men in scoring position.
HEY NOW, YOU'RE AN ALL-STAR: Earlier today, catcher Austin Romine (more on Romine below) and first baseman/DH Kyle Roller were named to the IL All-Star team. Romine boasts a 17-game hitting streak, tied for the longest string of swinging success in the league all season. He has hit .371 (26-for-70) over his run with 16 RBIs. Roller leads SWB and ranks among the IL's best in homers (12, T-4th), RBI (43, T-5th), walks (41, 2nd) and HR/AB ratio (1:22.25, 5th).
BOUNCING BACK: In his first effort after a records-tying loss to Lousiville, starter Jaron Long fired six scoreless innings. He worked his way out of a bases-loaded, nobody-out jam thanks in large part to a 1-2-3 double play againts Canzler in the opening inning. After three straight hits began the game to create that tough spot, he allowed only two more knocks and one walk the rest of the way while whiffing four. In nine games (eight starts) on the road, he has gone 4-1 with a 2.42 ERA. In seven home starts, he has gone 1-4 with a 7.54 ERA.
HERE COMES THE JUDGE: Aaron Judge went 2-for-4 with a pair of walks. He has reached base safely in 10 of his last 12 plate appearances.
SIMPLY THE BEST: Despite a nearly week-long layoff in the wake of being hit in the head with a fastball, Romine owns the IL's longest active hitting streak, matching Columbus shortstop Jose Ramirez (17-gamer from June 9-28) for the IL's best all year. Adonis Garcia set the RailRiders era record with a 21-gamer from July 17-Aug. 30, 2014 that tied for the longest in the league last season. Red Barons shortstop Pablo Ozuna set the overall SWB mark with a 27-gamer from July 27-Aug. 24, 2004.
GETTIN' FIGGY WITH IT: Cole Figueroa posted his sixth multi-hit showing in eight games. He went 2-for-4 with a sacrifice and an RBI to lift his batting average to .294. His average sat at .184 after an 0-for-3 day at Norfolk on May 11. Since then, he has hit .363/.419/.497/.915 over 41 games played. In that time he ranks among the IL's best in AVG (1st), OBP (2nd), SLG (5th) and OPS (2nd).
FALL FROM GRACE: Combined with Rochester's 8-4 win over Pawtucket, the RailRiders fell out of first place for the first time since claiming the catbird seat on June 9 by sleeping an impromptu doubleheader against Buffalo that included the conclusion of a suspended game. The Red Wings have won five in a row.
SINISTER SIX: The RailRiders have lost a season-worst six straight while being outscored 43-15. SWB had not lost six in a row since a seven-game dip from May 18-25, 2013. That slide started with a four-game sweep at Columbus and carried into three losses at home against Durham.
OFF THE RAILS: Rob Refsnyder singled once and walked twice...Since moving to the clean-up position, he is 5-for-13 (.385) with three RBIs, five walks (.579 OBP) and three runs scored...The IronPigs lead the season-long IronRail series, 5-4...SWB lost for the first time in six extra-inning games to become the IL's final team to suffer its first shutout defeat of the year...Only Rochester (2-2) has played fewer games with free baseball than SWB...The RailRiders suffered their fourth walk-off loss of 2015 and their first since June 7 at Rochester...Lehigh Valley swept SWB in a series longer than two games for the first time since claiming all three in a rain-shortened set in Moosic from May 17-20, 2011...The RailRiders have been swept in consecutive series.
