Blaze Left Twisted by Nuts, 8-1

July 2, 2015 - California League (CalL1)
Bakersfield Blaze News Release

An eerily familiar contest played out in Modesto, as the Bakersfield Blaze fell behind early, and the Modesto Nuts slowly pulled away in an 8-1 defeat, the second such final in the last five games.

For the second time in a week, it occurred during a start by Eddie Campbell (L, 3-4), who lasted just 3.1 innings in Modesto, allowing five runs on seven hits and four walks.

Kyle Schepel looked excellent in middle relief, pitching out of an inherited jam in the 4th before working 2.2 scoreless innings. Schepel was easily the bright spot on the mound for the Blaze tonight as he continues to rebound off a tough start to his Blaze tenure. Tonight, Kyle hit 95 on the stadium gun with a hard fastball and a tight-breaking slider sat near 87 mph, as well. Kyle was impressive, but the game slipped away after he left.

Carlos Misell allowed three runs in two innings of work, and has now surrendered runs in five of his last six appearances. Tonight, the Nuts plated all three in the 8th and turned a 5-1 game into an 8-1 lead, effectively putting the nail in Bakersfield's coffin.

Offensively, the Blaze were led by Austin Wilson, who reached base all three times on two hits and a hit-by-pitch, but were otherwise quiet.

Modesto started Harrison Musgrave (W, 10-1) allowed just one hit over seven innings of work, picking up his tenth straight victory.

Troy Neiman allowed Bakersfield's only run in the 8th, and Trent Daniel worked the 9th for the Nuts.

The loss drops Bakersfield to 1-5 in the second half, with two more in Modesto before the BIG JULY FOURTH BLOWOUT in Bakersfield in Saturday.

Thursday's road contest will pit Dan Altavilla (Bak) against Antonio Senzatela (Mod) in a battle of hard-throwing righthanders. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm. Fans can listen to the action online at BakersfieldBlaze.com or TuneIn Radio. Dan Besbris has the call, with pregame show set to begin at 7:00pm.
