Comeback Bid Falls Short In Front Of Another Packed House

July 1, 2015 - Atlantic League (AtL)
York Revolution News Release

The York Revolution battled back before falling to the Sugar Land Skeeters, 4-2 on Wednesday evening in front of 5,689 fans at Santander Stadium. The Revs will look to salvage a four-game split with the Skeeters in the final home game of the first half on Thursday night.

After 5,724 fans turned out on Sunday afternoon, Wednesday's attendance marked the first time in franchise history that the Revs have drawn crowds of 5,600-plus twice in four games on a non-season-ending homestand. The enthusiastic gathering was treated to a crisply-played game and a late comeback attempt from the home team.

Sugar Land did most of its damage in one rally, scoring three times in the top of the third. York starter Matt Neil seemed to be in control, quickly recording the first two outs. That was where the rally started, however, as Denny Almonte singled to center, followed by back-to-back walks to Ryan Adams and Delwyn Young. It was an uncharacteristic loss of the strike zone for Neil who has averaged just 1.8 walks per nine innings over his career. Travis Scott followed with a broken bat two-run single that landed just in front of right fielder Brandon Boggs' sliding attempt. Joe Benson added an RBI double to left-center, spotting Sugar Land a sudden 3-0 lead.

Almonte drove a two-out RBI double to right-center in the fourth, extending the lead to 4-0. All four of Sugar Land's runs came with two outs.

Things settled down from there as Neil's final two innings were scoreless. Frank Gailey tossed a pair of scoreless frames out of the bullpen, and Tony Pena made his Revs debut with an impressive ninth, striking out a pair.

On the other side, Skeeters starter Shane Loux (4-3) was extremely efficient, allowing just three hits over six shutout innings, needing just 66 pitches (44 strikes) to complete six.

The Revs battled back in the seventh off reliever Derek Blacksher, as Andres Perez doubled down the third base line with two outs and scored on a single to right by Luis De La Cruz, cutting the deficit to 4-1.

In the eighth, Shannon Wilkerson doubled to right-center and scored on a two-out single to left by Nick Ferdinand to bring York within 4-2.

Lefty Derrick Loop entered to record the final out of the eighth, but allowed a single to Perez and walked De La Cruz with one out in the ninth, bringing the winning run to the plate. Closer John Lujan entered and struck out Bryan Pounds for the second out. He then allowed a hard line drive off the bat of Wilson Valdez, but it was hit directly at the right fielder Benson for the game's final out, as the Revs stranded the tying runs on base.

Notes: Pounds went 2-for-4 with a double, recording two of York's three hits off Loux in his first game played since last Monday after being activated earlier in the day. Perez (2-for-4) moved past Scott Grimes for second in Revs history in career hits (375). He now stands just eight hits shy of tying James Shanks' franchise record of 383. His double in the seventh was the 88th of his Revs career and 131st extra-base hit, adding to those franchise records. Pena became the 44th player on the Revs active roster this season and 43rd used in a game; York used 45 players all of last season. Gailey has not allowed an earned run in eight innings over five appearances with York. Revs lefty Rommie Lewis (4-5, 3.16) will face Sugar Land's Sean Gallagher (1-6, 3.58) on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. The night concludes with the popular Laser Show presented by Wilke Enginuity. The first 1,000 fans receive a Revolution Camo Koozie Giveaway presented by Centric Business Systems. Tickets are on sale at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS, and in-person at the Apple Chevrolet Ticket Office.
