Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Fayetteville SwampDogs dropped a heartbreaker to the Wilmington Sharks, 5-4 Wednesday night at J.P. Riddle Stadium.
Things got started quickly for the Sharks, plating two unearned runs against Joey Lucchesi (Jr./Southeast Missouri) in the first inning. The Dogs kicked back with a run in the second inning, but Sharks runs in the third and fourth innings opened up a 4-1 lead.
The SwampDogs chipped away again in the fifth as a run came in to score to cut the lead to two, but the Sharks again answered right back in the next half inning plating an unearned run against Zach McKay (Soph./The Citadel).
In the seventh inning, Jimmy Faul (Jr./Louisville) drove home Cam Whitehead (Soph./Furman) to make it 5-3, and in the ninth, the SwampDogs would plate an additional run as Whitehead brought home Alex Liquori (Jr./Kennesaw State) with a single to right field.
Caleb Johnson was the winning pitcher, improving to 2-0 on the season, while Lucchesi (0-1) got the loss in his first SwampDogs start. Evan Braband got the save for Wilmington, his first of the summer.
The SwampDogs (12-17) hit the road Thursday to take on the Morehead City Marlins at 7:05 pm before returning home for a July 3rd matchup with the Holly Springs Salamanders. That game will be followed by the famous Honoring America Fireworks Tribute presented by Hendrick Chrysler Jeep Fiat, USAA and Disaster One! Get your tickets now by calling 910-426-5900.
