Devils Sign Forward Jim O'Brien

Newark, NJ - The New Jersey Devils today signed free agent forward Jim O'Brien to a one-year, two- way contract for $575,000 at the NHL level. The announcement was made by Devils' General Manager Ray Shero.

O'Brien, 26, joins the Devils' organization after completing the 2014-15 season with Hershey (AHL). While with the Bears, he recorded 10g-19a-29pts and 26 penalty minutes in 32 regular-season games, while adding 3g-1a-4pts and 8 PIM in ten post-season contests. The 6-2, 200-lb. forward began last season with Novokuznetsk Metallurg (KHL).

He saw action in 63 regular-season NHL matches with Ottawa from 2010-11 through 2012-13, recording 8g-4a-12pts and 14 PIM in the regular-season. O'Brien also appeared in seven career NHL playoff games, posting one assist. He began his pro career in 2008-09 with Binghamton (AHL), was a member of its 2011 Calder Cup Championship team, and has totaled 60g-86a-146pts and 198 penalty minutes in 266 career AHL games.

Born January 29, 1989 in Maplewood, MN, O'Brien was Ottawa's first choice and the 29th overall selection in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. He spent two seasons, 2007-08 and 2008-09, with Seattle (WHL), after winning the 2007 WCHA Championship with Minnesota. O'Brien represented Team USA at the 2009 World Junior Championships, won a Gold Medal at the 2006 Under-18 World Junior Championships, and a Silver in 2007. He played for the United States Development Program in both 2004-05 and 2005-06.
