Denver Outlaws vs. Boston Cannons Game Preview/Notes

July 1, 2015 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL) - Denver Outlaws News Release

DENVER - The Outlaws (5-5) will return home Saturday to Sports Authority Field at Mile High to take on the Boston Cannons (6-4) in the 10th annual Mile High Fourth of July celebration, presented by Xcel Energy. The faceoff is set for 7 p.m. MDT.

This contest marks the 17th all-time regular season meeting between the Outlaws and Cannons, with Boston leading the series 10-7. The Cannons are the only team to have a winning record against Denver in the Mile High City. The Outlaws are 1-6 against the Cannons at home, with three of those losses coming in the Mile High Fourth of July game, including the loss last season.

Denver opened up their 2015 season at Boston for the first time ever playing in Gillette Stadium. The Outlaws fell to the Cannons 16-13, led by Max Seibald's three goals as well as two-point goals from Rob Emery and Josh Amidon. Drew Snider led Denver and the MLL with a five-point performance in week 1. Justin Pennington and Chris Bocklet also recorded hat tricks in the loss.

Last week, Denver fell 14-11 to Charlotte despite contributions from rookies Erik Adamson and David Dickson. Adamson is the first true rookie to score a hat trick for the Outlaws, while Dickson recorded his first career point on an assist to John Grant, Jr., who had three goals in the game.

"Well, it's not easy," Head Coach B.J. O'Hara said of integrating rookies into the veteran lineup. "It's a difficult task for every team and every coaching staff. We have that challenge as well after having a lot of injury issues, so we're patching together a different lineup each week, and that's not really conducive to helping rookies move in seamlessly, so it's been a challenge for us. We're hoping to get some people healthy in the next week or two and hopefully get a little bit more consistent lineup. We were missing five starters on Saturday night, and that hurt us too."

A sixth starter had his best showing of the season in the loss, despite playing limited minutes. Jesse Schwartzman had a season-high 20 saves against the Hounds, including 10 first-quarter saves. Schwartzman and the Outlaws' defense struggled against the power-play, surrendering multiple power-play goals for just the third time this season.

Schwartzman will need a great performance against the Cannons, who lead the league with 10 two-point goals and 12 power-play goals on only 29 attempts. Denver is right behind Boston in power-play percentage, with 11 goals on 30 attempts.

After the match, fans will be treated to the only postgame stadium July 4 fireworks show in Denver. The show will provide a unique close-proximity experience with fireworks launched from inside the bowl at Sports Authority Field at Mile High. The fireworks show, for ticketed fans, will ignite close to 10,000 rounds and will be paired with a music video tribute on the stadium's 220-foot-long by 40-foot-high ThunderVision screen.

"It means everything to the league," MLL Founder Jake Steinfeld said of Denver's Mile High Fourth of July. "I look forward to this game. Wherever I am around the country, around the world, I count down the days until the Fourth of July. I'm excited because I'm finally going to be here."

Tune in to Altitude Sports Network or ESPN3 to see these two teams duke it out in the Mile High Fourth of July Saturday at 7 p.m. MDT.
