Wichita Wingnuts News Release

SIOUX FALLS (June 30, 2015) - Both the Wichita Wingnuts and Sioux Falls Canaries busted out the bats to score four runs in a lone inning early in Tuesday night's match-up at The Birdcage. After that point, the pitching staffs took control and it became a close-to-the-vest affair from which the Wingnuts surfaced with a 6-4 win.

The Wingnuts (20-17) put their four-spot on the board first courtesy of the middle of the lineup. With two outs, T.J. Mittelstaedt lined a double to the right center gap. John Nester followed by working a walk to put two on for Matt Padgett. The clean-up hitter grounded a ball up the middle that allowed the speedy Mittelstaedt to score and make it 1-0. Joash Brodin hooked a home run to the patio area above the right field wall for a bases-clearing three run home run. The shot made the score 4-0 and was Brodin's third of the season.

Scott Richmond (1-1) was almost untouchable as he worked perfectly through the Sioux Falls' lineup their first time around. In the fourth inning they made some adjustments and evened the score. Back-to-back single by Chris Grayson and Jerome Pena started the frame. With one down, David Bergin hit a double to deep left center just out of the reach of Joash Brodin that scored a pair and pulled the Canaries (17-21) within 4-2. With two outs in the inning, Michael Wing and R.J. Perucki each knocked hits that resulted in a run scoring to tie the game at 4-4.

Wichita managed to grab the lead against Jeremy Strawn (2-5) in the sixth. Brodin ripped a double to start the inning, but was tagged out trying to advance on Brent Dean's fielder's choice grounder to the left side. Dean managed to steal his way to second and then scored on Luis Hernandez's single up the middle on throw from Harrison Kain in center that hit the mound and bounced high over everyone's head.

In the eighth, Brodin smoked his third extra-base hit of the game, a double, with one out. Dean followed by shooting a ball down the right field line to increase the Wingnuts' lead to 6-4.

After both Daniel Bennett and Al Yevoli retired the side in order in the seventh and eighth inning, Daniel Carela entered hoping to pick up his first save.  After striking out the leadoff hitter in the ninth, he gave up an infield single on a flare to the right side that Taylor Oldham narrowly missed fielding. The right-hander rebounded to strike out the final two hitters of the game and preserve the lead.

The rubber match of the series will be played on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. RHP Tim Brown (3-1) will take the mound at The Birdcage against Canaries RHP Shawn Blackwell (1-5). The game will air on 92.7 KWME or can be streamed online by choosing the "Listen Live" link on www.wichitawingnutscom.
