Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

Gary, IN - After stranding runners in scoring position in the previous five innings, Gary SouthShore RailCats catcher Jaime Del Valle came through with a one-out single off the third base bag to give his team its first lead of the night to take the series opener with the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks 3-2.

'Cats starter Andy Roberts gave up a first inning run on a two-out Joe Bonfe single, but allowed just one more run through his next five innings. Roberts notched his second quality start of the season with his six inning, two run, four strikeout effort.

After Gary (19-17) tied the game on a Ryan Brockett fielder's choice in the fourth, Bonfe drove in his second run of the game with another two out single to left field to make it 2-1.

That's where the game would stay until the eighth, as Redhawks pitchers worked into and out of trouble inning after inning.

J.D. Pulfer led off the eighth with a screaming double into the left-centerfield gap before being advanced to third on Tillman Pugh's second sacrifice bunt of the evening.

Pulfer scored on a fielder's choice ground ball to first base off the bat of Drew Martinez, who then advanced to second on a wild throw home by Bonfe. That's when Del Valle grounded a ball off the third base bag to win the game.

'Cats relievers Paul Mittura, Shawn O'Neill and Chuck Fontana struck out five of the last six batters to seal the victory.

The RailCats host Fargo-Moorhead (10-28) two more times before hitting the road in Kansas City for the July 4th weekend.
