Cosgrove, Mountaineers Bats Earn 6-1 Victory

KEENE, N.H. - Backed by a strong offensive outing and solid pitching performance by starter Tom Cosgrove (Staten Island, N.Y / Manhattan), the Vermont Mountaineers defeated the Keene Swamp Bats, 6-1, in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action at Alumni Field on Tuesday night.

With the win, Vermont improves to 9-9 on the summer. Keene falls to 4-16 with the loss.

Vermont struck for three runs in the sixth to extend its lead to 6-1. Designated hitter Kevin Stypulkowski (Lake Worth, Fla. / Maine Orono) drilled a one out solo homerun off the scoreboard in right-center field to kick-start the Mountaineers offense and make it 4-1. After Jack Parenty (Wantagh, N.Y. / Stony Brook) reached on a perfectly placed bunt single down the third base line, he stole second but was thrown out at third after attempting to swipe the base on an overthrow. Leftfielder Riley Jackson (Lexington, Ky. / Louisville) followed with a walk. He stole second and reached third on a wild pitch. After Garrett Copeland (Bartlett, Tenn. / Austin Peay) walked, he reached second on a defensive indifference to set the scene at second and third with two outs. Austin Clemons (Louisville, Ky. / Louisville) and Nick Ruppert (La Mesa, Calif. / Dartmouth) connected on back-to-back RBI singles to score Jackson and Copeland and give the Mountaineers a 6-1 edge.

The Swamp Bats scored their lone run of the game in the fifth.

Vermont took an early lead in the second when rightfielder Pat Madigan (Freeport, N.Y. / Northeastern) knocked a solo blast to dead center field. The homerun marked his team leading third of the summer.

Two more runs in the fourth thanks to RBI singles by Stypulkowski and Jackson gave the Mountaineers a 3-0 lead in the middle innings.

Jackson had a game-high four stolen bases on the night.

Vermont starter, Cosgrove, dealt five innings and allowed one unearned run on four hits and a walk. He struck out six and earned the win to improve to 2-1 on the season.

Mountaineers' relievers Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif. / Eastern Michigan), Austin Foote (Lake Zurich, Ill. / Indiana) and Garrison Banas (Hadley, Mass. / Bryant) combined for four scoreless innings to ensure the win.

Keene starter Brian Hobbie (Springfield, Ill. / Indiana) took the loss to move to 0-2 on the summer. He pitched four innings and gave up three runs (all earned) on six hits and no walks. He struck out two.

Vermont returns to action on Wednesday night when the team hosts the New Bedford Bay Sox for a North-South showdown. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Recreation Field. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
