Staten Island Yankees News Release

After winning their first home game of the young 2015 season on Monday night, the Staten Island Yankees (7-5) defeated the State College Spikes (4-7) once again, 5-3.

The Baby Bombers got all the run support they needed for starting pitcher Derek Callahan (W, 2-0) with a big second inning. Brandon Wagner drew a walk from State College starting pitcher Carson Cross (L, 0-1) to kick off the inning followed by one of Jake Hernandez's three base hits in the game. After Zack Zehner drew another walk to load the bases, the Spikes went to the bullpen for Greg Tomchick. Facing his first batter of the game, Tomchick committed a throwing error on a ball hit back to the mound by Junior Valera, clearing the bases, allowing Valera to reach third. The Yankees got one more run in the inning as Kyle Holder hit a sacrifice fly to center field, plating Valera for a 4-0 lead.

State College got one run back in the top of the third inning as Harrison Bader, playing in his first professional game, hit a home run on the left field fence, cutting the lead to 4-1.

The Spikes further narrowed the lead in the top of the fifth inning as Thomas Spitz singled to right field followed by another home run by Bader, making the score 4-3 in favor of the Yankees.

With the Spikes creeping closer, Staten Island gained an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Jeff Hendrix reached second on a throwing error by shortstop Leobaldo Pina, then scored as Spikes reliever Kender Villegas threw the ball into centerfield on a pickoff attempt, making the score 5-3.

Staten Island will now go on the road for a three game set against the Aberdeen IronBirds before returning home for a three game series against Hudson Valley beginning on the Fourth of July with a post-game firework spectacular.
