Brooklyn Cyclones News Release

AUBURN, NY - June 29, 2015 - Michael Bernal came up just a single short of a cycle as the Brooklyn bats erupted for five extra base hits en route to a 11-4 win over the Auburn Doubledays.

The Cyclones offense stayed red hot in a wire-to-wire victory over Auburn on Monday evening. Michael Bernal narrowly missed becoming the first Brooklyn player ever to hit for the cycle, going 3-for-4 with his third home run of the year. Eight of nine Cyclones starters reached base via hit or walk in the 11-4 victory which gives the team a three game win streak.

The scoring started in the top of the first when the Cyclones notched three runs against Auburn starter Joan Baez. Branden Kaupe led off the game with a four pitch walk and Vinny Siena followed with a single off Baez's leg. Kaupe was thrown out trying to advance to third on Siena's base hit but Bernal quickly became the third straight hitter to reach with a double to right field. David Thompson then drove in the game's first run with a sacrifice fly that plated Siena. After Michael Katz and Jeff Diehl walked to load the bases, Zach Mathieu singled to center to score two runs and give Brooklyn a 3-0 edge.

Brooklyn starter Matt Blackham gave up a couple of first inning runs before settling into a groove. After the first, the right hander retired 10 of the next 11 batters he faced. He allowed two runs to cross in the 5th inning before being lifted with two outs. He struck out a team-high nine batters but narrowly missed getting the win because he was removed before going the requisite five frames.

The offense provided plenty of support for Blackham in the middle innings. After adding one run in the 4th against Auburn's reliever Mariano Rivera III, Brooklyn exploded for five more against Cody Gunter in the 5th. The Cyclones sent ten men to bat in the inning, recording five hits and capitalizing on three Doubledays errors. Bernal blasted a long two-run homer to left to start the scoring. The right fielder has three home runs and 10 RBI through the season's first 10 games. Mathieu and Kaupe later added RBI singles to expand Brooklyn's lead.

Bernal jumpstarted another rally in the 6th with a leadoff triple to right center. Thompson immediately followed with a triple down the right field line for his first professional extra base hit. He would score one batter later on Michael Katz's sacrifice fly.

One inning later, Bernal would come to the plate needing just a single to become the first Cyclone ever to hit for the cycle. He came up just short of the milestone when Auburn center fielder Andrew Stevenson caught his sinking liner in shallow left center field. Bernal's night raised his average to .344.

Handed a large lead, the Cyclones bullpen did the rest. Gaither Bumgardner (2-0), Ruben Reyes, Christian Montgomery, and Corey Taylor combined for 4 1/3 shutout innings to finish the game. Bumgardner, who stranded two inherited runners after entering in the 5th, got four outs and picked up his second win of the season. Brooklyn has not allowed a run in the last 16 2/3 innings worked by its relief corps.

The victory gives improves Brooklyn's record to 7-3 and keeps them in first place in the McNamara Division. The Cyclones have won their first four road games this season.

The Cyclones will look to complete the three-game sweep of the Doubledays tomorrow evening at 7:05 PM with LHP Kevin Canelon (0-1) taking the mount for Brooklyn. The team will then head to Hudson Valley on Wednesday before returning to MCU Park on Thursday for Back to the Future Night at the Ballpark. The first 3,000 fans in attendance will receive a 1.21 GigaWatts Jersey courtesy of Pepsi. Tickets, which start at just $10, are on sale now at the MCU Park Box Office, by calling 718-507-TIXX, or right here at BrooklynCyclones.com.
