Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
AKRON, OH - Michael Fulmer struck out a Double-A career-high nine, but was backed by only two hits in Binghamton's 1-0 loss to Akron on Monday night at Canal Park. The B-Mets stranded the tying run on third twice in the final four innings and were shutout for the second time in three games.
Following a 2:14 rain delay to start the contest, Fulmer opened his strong outing with a bang, striking out all three batters he faced swinging in a perfect first inning. The righty worked around a single in a blank second and collected his fourth strikeout in a perfect third.
Akron scratched out the game's only run thanks to a defensive misplay in the fourth. Gavin Cecchini threw away a potential double play, putting two aboard for Destin Hood. The RubberDucks outfielder chopped out to third, bringing home Ryan Rohlinger.
Xorge Carrillo created Binghamton's first chance against Clevinger by doubling to left-center to start the sixth. The right-hander responded by striking out Jared King, retiring Cecchini and fanning LJ Mazzilli, keeping Carrillo anchored to third.
Fulmer shook off the fourth and closed the night by posting three scoreless innings, retiring 11 of the final 12 batters he faced.
The B-Mets last opportunity came in the eighth when Josh Rodriguez walked to open the inning. Clevinger answered with back-to-back strikeouts before handing off to Enosil Tejeda. On the righty's first pitch, Rodriguez swiped second and took third on Tony Wolters' errant throw. King left him 90 feet away, striking out for third time in the game.
Clevinger (5-3) struck out a Double-A career-high nine and allowed two hits over 7-2/3 scoreless innings to earn his second straight win against Binghamton. Fulmer (2-1) allowed one unearned run on three hits over seven innings in the hard-luck loss. Jeff Johnson worked a perfect ninth to earn his 12th save.
The B-Mets (38-37) open a four-game series against the SeaWolves in Erie on Tuesday night at 7:05 PM. RHP Robert Gsellman gets the ball for Binghamton. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show can be heard starting at 6:50 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF and the Binghamton Mets channel on TuneIn.
