Omahen & Ijames Shine in 3-2 BayBears Win

MOBILE, AL - RHP John Omahen and outfielder Stewart Ijames made the jump form Single-A to Double-A at the beginning of the weekend. On Monday night the duo lifted the Mobile BayBears to a 3-2 win over the Tennessee Smokies in the series finale at Hank Aaron Stadium. The victory was the BayBears second straight win at home and Mobile sits just a game back of first place in the Southern League South Division through the first five games of the second half.

The BayBears scored first in the bottom of the second inning. With one out, Gabriel Guerrero reached with a single and scored from first in the next at bat when Rudy Flores doubled down the right field line to put Mobile up 1-0. The RBI for Flores was his team-high 37th of the season.

Tennessee then tied the game and took the lead from the BayBears in the top of the fourth inning. With two on and two out, Taylor Davis drove in the game-tying run with a RBI single that scored Willson Contreras and moved Billy McKinney to third. A batter later, McKinney crossed home plate for the go-ahead run with a RBI sacrifice fly from Stephen Bruno.

Down 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Ronnie Freeman reached with a lead-off single and set the stage for Ijames. The lefty powered out a two-run home run off the right field foul pole to put Mobile back on top 3-2. The pinch-hit homer was Ijames first long ball at the Double-A level.

LHP Keith Hessler came out of the Mobile bullpen in relief of Omahen in the eighth inning and struck out the side. In the ninth inning, RHP Silvino Bracho converted his fourth save in four tries this season nailing down the final three outs of the game.

Omahen (1-0) earned his first Double-A win after allowing just two earned runs on five hits, having walked one batter and striking out two in seven innings of work on the mound.

The BayBears will get some early-week rest with an off-day on Tuesday then travel to West Tennessee for a three game road series against the Jackson Generals. The BayBears will return to Hank Aaron Stadium for a 7:05 PM match up against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos on Saturday night July 4. Fans are encourageed to stick around after the game for a special 4th of July Fireworks show.
