Williamson Outduels Merritt as Revs Win 1-0

June 29, 2015 - Atlantic League (AtL)
York Revolution News Release

It was a lefty pitchers' duel on Monday night as the York Revolution faced off against the Sugar Land Skeeters in front of a crowd of 3,406 on Tennis Night at Santander Stadium. Logan Williamson went eight scoreless, scattering six hits, racking up three strikeouts and keeping the Skeeter hitters off balance all night with a variety of off-speed pitches. He threw 111 pitches in the victory, 70 for strikes.

Opposing WIlliamson was fellow lefty Roy Merritt, who matched Williamson's eight innings, but made one crucial mistake that would decide the game.

Revs DH Yeicok Calderon came through in the clutch in the seventh, blasting a homer into the Apple Subaru lawn section to account for the only run of the game and giving Williamson a chance to earn the victory in the process.

Just prior to the home run, Williamson had run into trouble in the top half of the seventh, as runners reached second and third with only one out, but was able to retire Patrick Palmeiro on a pop up with the infield in and coax a ground ball from Skeeters second baseman Amadeo Zazueta to escape the jam with the lead still intact.

Revs closer Josh Judy came into close the game in the ninth, but promptly gave up a single to shortstop Kevin Russo to lead off the inning. Judy was able to bounce back in a big way though, getting a flyout from Johan Limonta and then blowing fastballs by Chris Wallace and Palmeiro to emphatically shut the door for his ninth save of the year.

The Revs look to make it three in a row on #YorkRevs Social Media night on Tuesday, as Anthony Lerew (3-4, 3.59) takes on Matt Wright (3-2, 3.53). Tickets are on sale at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS, and in-person at the Apple Chevrolet Ticket Office.

Notes: The 1-0 win was the Revs' first since winning back-to-back 1-0 games on June 14 and June 15, 2012 at Somerset. It was their first at home since Game 5 of the 2010 Division Series, and their first at home in a regular season game since June 23, 2007 vs. Somerset. It is the fourth time in franchise history the Revs have earned a 1-0 win with the only run coming on a home run (first time at home). Calderon's home run marked his second since joining the Revs and first at Santander Stadium. At two hours and four minutes, it matched the Revs' win vs. Lancaster on June 7 for the quickest nine-inning game in Santander Stadium history, coming within two minutes of the franchise's quickest nine-inning game all-time. York has won back-to-back home games for the third time this season; it is their first set of back-to-back wins overall since June 7 and June 9 vs. Lancaster. The win snapped a six-game losing streak head-to-head against the Skeeters. Williamson exacted revenge from his other eight-inning performance when he lost 1-0 at home to the Skeeters on June 3. It marked the ninth time in ten starts that Williamson has allowed two earned runs or fewer, and the eighth time allowing one earned run or fewer. Williamson (3-4) has won two of his last three starts. Williamson stranded runners at second and third in the seventh, and also stranded runners at the corners in the sixth, keeping the game scoreless despite allowing three consecutive singles. Williamson erased the first of those singles when he caught Almonte stealing for his fourth pickoff/caught stealing of the season, already tied for third most in a season in team history. With seven pickoffs/caught stealings in his Revs career, Williamson is tied for fifth in Revs history in that category. The win was the Revs' third shutout victory of the season, all at home. Merritt (2-2) has allowed just four runs in 35.0 innings all season. Merritt's eight innings marked a season-high. Merritt allowed one hit through the first five innings while Williamson surrendered one hit through the first four innings, retiring 13 straight after a game-opening single by Denny Almonte. The four hits marks the Revs' fewest in a victory this season. The Revs are 2-1 since Darryl Strawberry's visit to York.
