Vancouver Canadians News Release
(Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium - Vancouver, B.C.) - (Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium - Vancouver, B.C.) - A four-run, bottom of the 7th broke a 2-2 tie that sent Vancouver to a third-straight victory over the Hillsboro Hops on Sunday afternoon out at Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium.
Starting pitching dictated much of the game early on as both RHP Clinton Hollon and Hillsboro RHP Tyler Bolton went pitch-for-pitch over the first few innings until sloppy defense cost the Hops in the bottom of the 3rd inning.
A series of Hillsboro errors helped the C's take an early 2-0 lead with Earl Burl III scoring the first run of the afternoon after being hit by a pitch, stealing second, advancing to third on JC Cardenas' sacrifice fly, and coming home on Lane Thomas' single. Thomas then stole second and came home when Gabriel Cenas reached first thanks to an errant throw by Hillsboro's Sergio Alcantara.
The Hops tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning as designated hitter Stephen Dessi hit his first professional home run, a two-run shot that bounced off the top of the right field fence and over.
The C's reclaimed their lead with a four-run seventh inning that saw Burl III lace a hard-hit single that scored Ryan Metzler, Kevin Garcia, and Juan Tejada aided by throwing error from Hops' left fielder Gerard Hernandez. Burl III advanced to third shortly after on a ground out off the bat of JC Cardenas and saw the crowd rise to their feet in unison shortly after he broked from third base, scoring on a wild pitch from Mike Cetta to make it 6-2.
Canadians starter Clinton Hollon threw six innings with four strikeouts, two hits, and two runs allowed before being relieved by Travis Bergen, who pitched 2.1 scoreless innings with three strikeouts and was credited with his second win of the season. Bergen left in the top of the 9th inning with one out, giving way to Andrew Case who needed just one pitch to seal the deal as Fernery Ozuna grounded into a game-ending double play.
The Canadians improved their record to 6-5 through 11 NWL games, securing the first series victory of the season with a third straight win.
