Buchanan Leads the Way for Cannons in 14-11 Victory

FOXBOROUGH, MA (June 28th, 2015) - It was a rainy day for lacrosse at the Boston Cannons home field of Gillette Stadium, but the Cannons made it well worth the price of admission by putting on a show for fans. The Cannons defeated the Chesapeake Bayhawks in the first meeting between these two teams in the 2015 season. Both teams came in to the evening just three games behind first place in the MLL standings with 5-4 overall record, as the Cannons walked away with a 14-11 victory.

The Cannons offense came out of the locker room flying. Boston controlled much of the possession and the face-off circle in the first few minutes. Four Cannons goals in the first five minutes of the game, one from Kevin Buchanan(assisted by Seibald), two from defensemen Scott Ratliff (assisted by Josh Hawkins and Will Manny) and another fromDavey Emala (assisted by Ratliff), gave the Cannons an early lead over Chesapeake.

The Bayhawks were eventually able to find the back of the net halfway through the first quarter to bring the score to 4-1. Chesapeake cut Boston's lead to two goals with less than five minutes remaining in the quarter. The last few minutes of the quarter were filled with up and down runs from both teams. Jordan Burke captained the Cannons defense from in between the pipes, with multiple vital saves shutting down the Chesapeake attack. In the final minute of the quarter, the Bayhawks netted another to make the score 4-3.

Chesapeake started off the scoring in the second quarter. Two goals within ten seconds from the Bayhawks gave them their first lead of the night. Buchanan found the back of the net for the second time tonight to tie the game up at 5 with less than ten minutes remaining in the half. Captain Max Seibald netted his first of the night to give the Cannons the lead again with an impressive dodge and shot for an unassisted goal. The first half finished 6-5.

Goals from Kevin Crowley and Ben Rubeor gave Chesapeake a 7-6 lead just minutes into the third quarter. However, the Chesapeake lead was short lived as Buchanan netted his third goal of the game coming off of an assist from rookieRyan Tucker to tie things up at seven. The Cannons retook the lead just over thirty seconds later when Brent Adamsfound Owen Blye, followed by a tally by John Glessnor, registering his first career MLL goal (2-pointer).

For the second time of the third quarter, Westervelt assisted on a Ben Rubeor goal to cut the Cannons lead to two. The next seven minutes featured strong defensive efforts from both defenses as neither team was able to find the back of the net. However, a diving goal from Matt Danowksi with just 13 seconds remaining in the third quarter brought the Bayhawks to within one. The Cannons entered the fourth quarter hanging on to a 10-9 lead.

The Bayhawks started off the fourth quarter scoring with a goal from Westervelt assisted by Rubeor to tie things up once again. However, the tie was short lived as Boston responded with a flurry of goals over the next three minutes. Rob Emery and Buchanan each registered unassisted goals just over thirty seconds apart. Then, Hopkins assisted Bowesand Wells Stanwick assisted on Buchannan's fifth goal of the game to extend the Cannons lead to 14-10. With just under two minutes remaining, Westervelt scored coming off a pass from Danowski to cut the Cannons lead to three. However, the Cannons defense held tough during the final minutes of the game, and Boston was able to come away with a 14-11 win.

Kevin Buchananwas named Coca-Cola player of the game following his five goal performance. Ratliff (2 goals, 1 assist), Bowes (1 goal, 1 assist) and Seibald (1 goal, 1 assist) also helped lead a strong offensive for the Cannons.Craig Bunker had a dominate day at the face-off x as he won 19 of 27 face-offs while collecting a game-high 11 groundballs. Brodie Merrill had a strong defensive performance while collecting 10 groundballs himself. Jordan Burkeprovided a strong backstop in net for the Cannons while registering 18 saves.

Boston will look to continue their winning ways when they visit the Denver Outlaws next Saturday, July 4th. The Cannons will return to Gillette Stadium on Saturday, July 11th at 6:00 pm when they play the Ohio Machine in their regular season finale at home.
