Austin Aztex News Release
Austin, Texas - The Austin Aztex (5-7-3) and Sacramento Republic FC (9-6-2) battled to a 0-0 draw, Saturday night at Kelly Reeves Athletic Complex in Austin. With the tie, the season series between these two clubs comes to an end, with the Aztex capturing a total of four out of the potential six points against the reigning league champions.
The Aztex came out firing in the first half with several early chances. Forward Sainey Touray had three dangerous opportunities in the first 20 minutes but was unable to capitalize, missing high each time. The Aztex defense kept Sacramento in check for the majority of the first half, with Austin controlling possession. A late chance for Sacramento came in extra time when Forward Rodrigo Lopez dribbled into the box and fired from 15 yards out, but was blocked by Aztex defender Lance Rozeboom.
Sacramento responded in the second half with aggressive offensive play, with momentum swinging between the two teams throughout the half. Sacramento thought they had scored the game winner with an 83^rd minute open net goal, but were called offside. The Aztex continued to find openings in the Sacramento defense leading to chances, but were not able to find the back of the net for a game-winning goal. Aztex goalkeeper Devin Perales and Sacramento's Patrick McClain would both end up with the shutout after coming up with crucial saves in the second half.
With the tie, the Aztex get a crucial point in the standings to move them into the playoff picture for the time being. Sacramento, who came into the match at first in the conference, will maintain their position at the top of the standings.
The Aztex will continue their USL campaign on July 3^rd, when they will face Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC in Colorado.
