MONTPELIER, Vt. - The Vermont Mountaineers dropped a New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) contest to the Laconia Muskrats, 7-4, at Recreation Field on Friday night.

With the loss, Vermont falls to 7-8 on the season. Laconia improves its record to 11-6 and maintains its position atop the Northern Division.

The Mountaineers led 4-3 entering the eighth inning, but two runs from the Muskrats in the eight and two more in the ninth pushed them to a 7-4 victory.

In the eighth, Laconia second baseman Brian Mims (Dumfries, Va. / UNC Wilmington) reached with a one out walk. Muskrats' catcher Deon Stafford (Marysville, Pa. / St. Joseph's) followed with a single. Laconia executed a double steal, moving the runners to second and third. After rightfielder Will Mackenzie (Fort McCoy, Fla. / Stetson) struck out, designated hitter Braxton Martinez walked to load the bases. First baseman Cameron Hanley (Walpole, Mass. / Northeastern) connected on a two out two RBI single to give the Muskrats a 5-4 edge.

In the ninth, shortstop Vinny DeMaria (Tarrytown, N.Y. / Iona) led off with a single. After centerfielder James Davison (Dolton, Ill. / Howard) walked, leftfielder Carter Grote (South Park, Pa. / Furman) laid down a sacrifice bunt to move runners to second and third with one out. Mims then singled to score DeMaria and make it 6-4. Davison scored on a wild pitch later in the inning to make it 7-4.

Trailing 1-0 entering the bottom of the second, Vermont struck for three runs. First baseman Joe Dudek (Wall Township, N.J. / Kentucky) led off with a double. Third baseman Ridge Smith (Clarksville, Tenn. / Austin Peay) ripped an RBI double to tie the game at one. Later in the inning, leftfielder Laren Eustace (Batavia, Ill. / Indiana) knocked a two RBI single to give the Mountaineers a 3-1 advantage.

After Laconia scored twice in the top of the sixth to tie the game at three, Vermont scored in the bottom of the sixth to regain the lead, at 4-3.

Sean Leland (Orland Park, Ill. / Louisville) started for the Mountaineers and pitched six innings. He allowed three runs (all earned) on seven hits. He struck out six.

Laconia starter Josh Moore (Villa Ridge, Mo. / St. Louis) lasted five and two-thirds innings and gave up four runs (all earned) on four hits and five walks. He struck out five.

Neither starter received a decision.

Vermont reliever Tim Knesnik (Milford, Pa. / Stony Brook) took the loss. He dealt an inning and one-third and allowed one earned run on no hits and one walk. He fell to 1-1 on the summer.

Reliever Mike Gentile (Windsor Locks, Conn. / AIC) earned the win to improve to 1-0. He pitched an inning and one-third and gave up no runs on no hits and two walks. He struck out two.

The Mountaineers return to action on Saturday night when they host the North Adams SteepleCats for a 6:30 p.m. meeting at Recreation Field. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
