Wichita Wingnuts News Release

WICHITA, KS - The Wichita Wingnuts fought from behind to grab a sixth inning lead on Friday night as they tried to win their first game of a series between the top two teams in the American Association's South Division. However the resilient Joplin Blasters came right back to tie the game in the seventh and take the lead in the ninth on the strength of three triples. The Wingnuts could not overcome a 13-3 disadvantage in the hit column and dropped their third straight game by a 6-3 score.

Joplin (20-11) opened the scoring by getting to right-handed Wingnuts' starter Tim Brown in the third inning. Jesus Solorzano began the frame with a single and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Gabe Suarez. With two outs, Mitch Glasser flipped a base hit into right field to put the Blasters ahead 1-0.

Wichita (18-15) mustered only a lone single in the game's first five innings against Joplin hurler Matt Parish. That changed in the sixth when Parish walked consecutive hitters with one out. Joash Brodin followed the free passes with a seeing-eye single through the right side that knotted the score at 1-1. After Parish rebounded to strikeout Matt Padgett, Dustin Geiger pulled a two-RBI double into the left field corner that put the Wingnuts ahead 3-1.

The lead was short-lived when Joplin tied the game and chased Brown with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh. The inning began with another Solorzano base hit. Once again Suarez bunted him to second. Oscar Mesa followed by slapping a triple into the left field corner that scored Solorzano and cut the lead to 3-2. Mitch Glasser then executed a suicide squeeze bunt that plated Mesa and pulled the Blasters even on the scoreboard. Brown allowed three runs on 11 hits with two strikeouts in 6.2 innings.

New addition Frankie Reed (0-1) finished the seventh inning and returned to the mound for the start of the eighth. He induced a groundout by the first batter, but his night ended following a triple from Jake Taylor. Kevin Hooper went to the bullpen again for hard-throwing Daniel Carela. Steve Tinoco quickly gave the Blasters a 4-3 lead with his own triple. He scored on Solorzano's chopper to third which extended the advantage to 5-3.

Joplin added one final run without the help of a hit in the ninth against Al Yevoli. Mesa walked and moved to second on Glasser's sacrifice bunt. He stole third without a throw and then scored on a wild pitch.

The win was credited to left-hander Gabe Aguilar (1-0) who pitched the final 2.2 innings and never allowed a hit.

Game four will begin on Saturday night and feature a match-up between Wingnuts' RHP Jason Van Skike (3-1) and LHP Jon Jones (0-1) of the Blasters. The game will feature a special visitor in the form of Kansas City Royals mascot Sluggerrr.
