Lizards Fall to Florida, 16-12
June 26, 2015 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL) - New York Lizards News Release
Boca Raton, Florida - The Lizards have dropped their first in a two-game road trip and second in a row to now 2-8 Florida Launch, defeating recently undefeated New York 16-12.
It was a battle of the goalies throughout the game, Drew Adams and Brett Queener each making some great saves. Adams racked up 17 saves during the battle, giving it his all with the reaction time of a hockey goalie.
The first shot of the night was taken by JoJo Marasco at only a minute into the first quarter. Marasco would go on to net three more goals during the game. John Austin and Matt Gibson were both hit with penalties early in the quarter as well, giving Florida the power play. Mike Stone and rookie Ryan Walsh also contributed, but a two-pointer by Florida tied it up to end the first quarter.
The Lizards came out quickly in the second with a goal from Rob Pannell and assist by Ned Crotty. Once again, Florida fought back and ended the quarter with a 10-7 lead.
New York recorded their first power play of the game in the third but came out empty handed as the only goals scored were by Mike Skudin, his first of the season, and another by Walsh. A ward-off by Casey Powell voided his goal and left the score standing at 11-10 in favor of Florida at the end of the third.
The last quarter of the game proved to be no different for the Lizards as they lost another power play opportunity. New York went 0-for-3 in man-up opportunities this week, a key weakness that opposing teams have consistently taken advantage of. Florida on the other hand went 2-for-5 in their own man-up opportunities.
An important improvement from last week against the Charlotte Hounds was denying rebound shots off saves by Drew Adams. Adams was sure to lock away any shots that came near him, but the Lizards offense still came up short.
Key returns next week, including Paul Rabil, Brian Spallina, and Luke Duprey are keeping the Lizards hopeful that they can turn this downward streak around and get back on a winning track.
New York will take on their rivals, the Bayhawks, in Chesapeake next Thursday, July 2nd at 7:30 p.m. and then return home on Thursday, July 9th to take on the Denver Outlaws.
