Barons Slug Way Past Generals 3-1 Friday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Barons (35-36, 2-0) blasted three home runs to take a 3-1 win over the Generals (29-41, 0-2) on Ovarian Cancer Awareness Night at Regions Field.

Danny Hayes, Rob Brantly and Brian Fletcher flexed their muscles to post the first three-homer game of the season. Fletcher's solo shot came in the sixth, while Hayes and Brantly went back-to-back on consecutive pitches in the fifth inning.

Birmingham starter Mark Blackmar (2-4, 3.21 ERA) turned in his second quality start in a row and earned his second save in as many games. The right-hander tossed 6.2 innings, allowing just one run while striking out five. Raul Fernandez was the middle man, throwing 1.1 innings and getting his second hold, while J.B. Wendelken closed out the contest in the ninth to earn his third save.

Jackson collected just one less hit than Birmingham, seven, and left 10 runners on base. Six of the Generals hits came courtesy of just three batters. Ian Miller, Jordy Lara and Tyler Smith each posted two hits.

Moises Hernandez (3-3, 4.30 ERA) was on the losing end of the pitching duel, exiting after 5.2 innings of work. The right-hander gave up seven hits and just three runs, each courtesy of Baron homers.

Christian Marrero was 2-for-4 with a double, and Hayes was 3-for-3 including his third long ball. Leadoff batter Tim Anderson was held hitless, 0-for-3, on his bobblehead night.

ON DECK

The series continues Saturday with a 6:30 p.m. first pitch set for game three. White Sox No. 6 prospect Tyler Danish (4-4, 4.63 ERA) gets the nod against Jackson's Misael Siverio (2-7, 4.55 ERA).
