Biloxi Shuckers News Release
JACKSONVILLE, FL - Starter Tyler Wagner hadn't won since May 12, but the Shuckers' ace tossed seven quality innings and induced 13 groundouts in a 7-3 win over the Jacksonville Suns at Bragan Field on Friday night. Orlando Arcia provided the offense with a double, triple, two runs and two RBI as every starter reached base safely. Arcia has a league-leading 26 multi-hit games this season. The series is now even at 1-1, but Biloxi leads the overall season-series 9-3 over Jacksonville.
Biloxi (1-1) jumped out on top first with a two-run first inning after Josh Fellhauer (1x3, RBI, R, BB) drew a one-out walk and Arcia (2x5, 2 RBI, 2 R, 2B, 3B) tripled him home for a quick 1-0 lead. Arcia would score on a wild pitch to Michael Reed (1x4, RBI, BB) to put the Shuckers up two.
Jacksonville (0-1) tied things up in the second on a botched double play. Sharif Othman came up with the bases loaded and one out and bounced a grounder to second baseman Nathan Orf (1x4, RBI, R, BB), who flipped to Arcia for the first out, but an errant throw to first by the Shuckers' shortstop allowed a second run to score on the play.
Arcia redeemed himself in the fourth with a RBI double as part of a three-run outburst to give the Shuckers a 5-2 lead, in which they never looked back.
Taylor Green (1x3, R, 2 BB), Adam Weisenburger (0x4, R) and Tyler Wagner (1x4, R) reached safely to start the frame and load the bases for Orf, who drew a walk to force in Green and put Biloxi back on top and force Suns' starter Scott Lyman (0-2) from the game. A sacrifice fly by Fellhauer gave the Shuckers a two-run advantage before Arcia's RBI double to complete the scoring in the fourth, giving Biloxi a 5-2 edge. Green extended his hitting streak to six games with a two-out single in the ninth.
Biloxi padded onto its lead in the sixth with two unearned runs on a RBI single by Reed and a sacrifice fly by Nick Ramirez (1x3, RBI, 2B, BB) to take a commanding 7-2 lead.
Wagner (6-2, 7 IP, 3 R, - 2 ER - 6 H, BB, 5 SO) was locked in after the two-run second, allowing just one run in his final five innings and retiring 15 of the final 19 batters he faced en route to his eighth quality start of the season. Mike Strong (IP, BB) and Jacob Barnes (IP, SO) worked the final two frames to seal the Shuckers' victory.
Biloxi will look to jump ahead in the five-game series with All-Star RHP Jorge Lopez (5-2, 3.02) going against big-league rehabber RHP Jose Fernandez (0-0, 0.00) Fernandez was the 2013 NL Rookie of the Year and underwent Tommy John surgery in 2014.
