G-Braves One-Hit Pawtucket in 1-0 Win

Gwinnett Stripers News Release
PAWTUCKET, RI - In a game dominated by pitching, the Gwinnett Braves (37-36) pushed across a run in the top of the ninth inning and edged past the Pawtucket Red Sox (36-39) by a 1-0 score Friday night in the opener of the three-game series at McCoy Stadium.
In that top of the ninth, Daniel Castro led off with a single to center off Red Sox starting pitcher Steven Wright, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jose Yepez and to third on a ground out to second by Mallex Smith. Jose Peraza then lifted a 1-1 pitch from Wright just inside the right field line and beyond the reach of three Pawtucket players. The double scored Castro from third for the winning run.
Prior to Castro reaching third in the top of the ninth, no player on either side had advanced past second base in the game.
Right-hander Alex White was terrific in his third start of the season for Gwinnett, but settled for a no-decision. He pitched 7.0 innings with one hit, four walks and three strikeouts. The only hit White allowed was a one-out bloop single to left by Pawtucket's Matt Spring in the bottom of the fifth. Peter Moylan (W, 2-0) followed with a scoreless eighth inning including a strikeout, and David Carpenter (S, 2) pitched a perfect bottom of the ninth with one strikeout.
Wright (L, 2-2) was the tough-luck loser for Pawtucket, as the knuckleballer went the entire 9.0 innings with four hits, one earned run and five strikeouts.
For Gwinnett, Castro was 2-for-3 with a run, Peraza was 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI and Cedric Hunter was 1-for-3.
For the Red Sox, Spring was 1-for-3.
The G-Braves and Red Sox continue the three game series Saturday night at McCoy Stadium. Gwinnett will send left-hander Manny Banuelos (6-2, 2.03) to the mound, while the Red Sox will counter with right-hander and former Kell High School (Marietta, GA) star Zeke Spruill (4-2, 4.02). Tony Schiavone has the play-by-play call on 97.7 FM and WSBRadio.com beginning at 5:30 p.m. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m.
