Winston Holds Off Hillcats, Improves To 2-0 In Second Half

Winston-Salem Dash News Release

LYNCHBURG, VA - A five-run second inning propelled the Winston-Salem Dash past the Lynchburg Hillcats 6-4 on Friday at Calvin Falwell Field. As a result, Winston-Salem has won the first two games of a half for just the third time in the Dash era (2009-present).

The Dash (2-0, 32-40) struck first for the second consecutive evening, with Omar Narvaez and Nolan Earley each singling with one out to start the rally. After a T.J. Williams walk loaded the bases, Lynchburg (0-2, 33-39) starter Mitch Brown (2-8) issued another free pass to Cleuluis Rondon for Winston-Salem's first run.

Michael Suiter followed with a two-run double, and Adam Engel's single cashed in another. Jake Peter beat out the relay on a potential inning-ending double play to score one more and complete the five-run frame.

Lynchburg responded in the third after a leadoff walk issued by Winston starter Robinson Leyer to Eric Haase. Two batters later, Luigi Rodriguez's double drove in Haase from first to put the Hillcats on the board at 5-1.

Narvaez coaxed a walk with one out in the fifth and then came all the way around to score on a throwing error by Brown to put the Dash on top 6-1.

Brown's evening finished after the fifth, with the right-hander surrendering six runs, five earned, on four hits with four walks and six strikeouts to take the loss.

Leyer surrendered back-to-back singles to begin the bottom of the fifth before retiring the next two Hillcats. However, a walk of Nellie Rodriguez loaded the bases before a free pass to LeVon Washington turned the carousel to draw Lynchburg within four at 6-2 and end Leyer's night.

Robinson's brother Euclides Leyer (2-0) came into the game and induced a pop out to short off the bat of Joe Sever to escape more trouble in the frame. Robinson was charged with two runs on six hits in 4.2 innings. He walked three against six strikeouts.

Euclides picked up the win in 1.1 innings of relief. He gave up a solo homer to Clint Frazier to start the seventh before walking the next two, spelling the end of his night.

Brad Goldberg came into the game and fanned two before Narvaez picked off Paul Hendrix at second to end the seventh. Lynchburg finished just 3-for-14 with runners in scoring position.

Mike Papi began the eighth with a double and moved to third on an infield single, coupled with an error. Yhoxian Medina singled him home, but Michael Ynoa was able to induce a double play before getting a strikeout to end the threat with the score at 6-4. Ynoa would work a scoreless ninth for his fourth save, tied for the most on the club.

With their first 2015 sweep on the line, the Dash will send Brandon Brennan (0-1, 7.04 ERA) to the mound Saturday against Lynchburg's Dace Kime (2-3, 4.50 ERA). Pregame coverage is available at 6:15 p.m., with the first pitch at 6:30 p.m. on wsdash.com/broadcast and the TuneIn App.

Following Saturday's finale in Virginia, the Dash come home for three against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. The series begins with a Family Sunday at 5 p.m., meaning hot dogs and sodas are just $1 through the end of the second inning of Sunday's contest. Plus, a few Dash players will be available before the game for autographs. For tickets, call the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or visit wsdash.com.
