Top Prospect Trea Turner to Join Chiefs
June 26, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Syracuse Mets News Release
The Syracuse Chiefs are pleased to announce the addition of shortstop Trea Turner to the team's roster. Turner, ranked the Nationals' #2 overall prospect and baseball's #51 overall prospect by MLB.com, joins the Chiefs after 10 games in Double-A Harrisburg. A corresponding roster move to clear space for Turner will follow.
Turner, a 21-year-old from Lake Worth, Florida, was selected last year as the 13th overall pick in the 2014 MLB Draft out of North Carolina State by the San Diego Padres. The Nationals moved to acquire him on December 19th in a three-team deal with San Diego and Tampa Bay, which sent Joe Ross to Washington and Steven Souza, Jr. and Travis Ott to Tampa Bay. Turner, technically named as a "player to be named later", officially reported to the Nationals on June 14th, due to a rule preventing players from being officially traded within a year of their being drafted.
This season, Turner hit .322 with a .385 on-base percentage and .471 slugging percentage in 58 games with the San Antonio Missions, the Padres' Double-A affiliate in the Texas League. Turner collected 13 doubles, three triples, five home runs and 11 stolen bases (in 15 attempts) with the team. After being sent to Harrisburg, the Nationals' Double-A affiliate, on June 14th, Turner was 14 for 39 (.359) with four doubles, a triple, four RBIs, a walk and four stolen bases in 10 games with the Senators.
Thursday, Turner was named to the All-Star Futures Game, the annual baseball exhibition to showcase the game's top minor-league talent, to play for the U.S. team. The Futures Game will take place on Sunday, July 12th, at 3 p.m. in Cincinnati.
Turner joins his former Padres teammate, Ross, who made his Chiefs debut with a five-inning, three-run performance Thursday, on the Syracuse roster. Both Turner and Ross were named among baseball's top 100 prospects this offseason by ESPN's Keith Law.
The Chiefs are scheduled to begin a three-game series at Indianapolis Friday night at 7:15.
