San Jose Giants News Release
SAN JOSE, CA - The Modesto Nuts scored all five of their runs on two-out hits in a 5-2 victory over the San Jose Giants on Thursday evening at Municipal Stadium. In the second half opener for both clubs, Modesto jumped out early with single runs in the second, third and fourth innings and never trailed en route to the win.
Christian Arroyo (2-for-4) was the only Giants player to finish the game with more than one hit.
The Nuts took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second against San Jose starter Tommy Hanson. A two-out single from Troy Stein started the rally before Dillon Thomas drew a walk. Wilson Soriano then lined a single up the middle to plate Stein with the first run of the game.
Luis Ysla relieved Hanson to start the top of the third and immediately ran into trouble as Raimel Tapia led off with a single and stole second. Tapia was still at second with two outs when Corelle Prime stepped to the plate and lined an RBI single into left to make it 2-0.
Modesto added another run against Ysla (2 2/3 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO) in the top of the fourth as Stein doubled to start the frame and scored on Zach Osborne's two-out double to deep left center.
Meanwhile, Nuts starter Harrison Musgrave began his night with four scoreless innings while the Giants didn't pick-up a hit until Arroyo singled with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. San Jose finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth. Three straight one-out singles from Ben Turner, Daniel Carbonell and Brian Ragira loaded the bases. Ty Ross was up next and he blooped a single into shallow right center plating Turner to bring the Giants to within 3-1. Musgrave though rebounded to strikeout Seth Harrison before Jeff Kobernus grounded out to shortstop to end the inning.
In the sixth, San Jose put a runner at second with none out as Arroyo reached on an error before moving up on a wild pitch. However, Modesto reliever Troy Neiman pitched out of trouble inducing Hunter Cole to fly out to shallow right, Ryder Jones to line out softly to second and then retiring Turner on another fly out to right.
Still trailing 3-1, the Giants rallied in the bottom of the seventh. A walk to Carbonell started the frame before a wild pitch advanced the runner to second. After Ragira grounded out and Ross struck out, Harrison bounced a single into shallow right to plate Carbonell to cut the Nuts lead to 3-2. Kobernus though followed with a fly out to the warning track in deep left center to end the inning.
Tyler Rogers (2 1/3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 SO) excelled in relief for San Jose before Ian Gardeck (1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO) surrendered two runs in the top of the eighth. After the Giants had cut the deficit to a single run, Rosell Herrera led off the eighth with a single before moving to second on a balk. Thomas then singled with one out to put runners on the corners. After Thomas stole second and Soriano grounded out, Osborne delivered a two-out single up the middle to score both runners extending the Modesto advantage to 5-2.
In the bottom of the eighth, Arroyo singled to leadoff before Jones singled with one out bringing the tying run to the plate, but Turner struck out and Carbonell popped out to halt the rally. Nuts closer Matt Carasiti then needed just seven pitches to breeze through a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth to finish the game.
Musgrave (9-1) earned his league-leading ninth win after tossing five innings with one run and five hits allowed. He struck out four and walked none. Carasiti picked-up his third save of the year.
Hanson (1-1) was saddled with the loss for San Jose. The right-hander surrendered one run on two hits over two innings pitched. Hanson walked one and struck out two.
