June 25, 2015 - Eastern League (EL1)
Bowie Baysox News Release
Bowie, Md. - It took 11 innings, but the Baysox earned a comeback 5-4 win over New Britain Thursday to improve to 10 games over .500 for the first time since the end of the 2012 season. After falling behind 4-2 in the top of the 11th inning, the Baysox rallied for three runs in the bottom half of the inning, topped off by a Tucker Nathans walk-off single for the win.
Jonathan Schoop got things started for the Baysox with a lead off home run to put Bowie up 1-0. Schoop has hit home runs in three consecutive games, including two lead off homers, while rehabbing with the Baysox. With the Baysox on a MLB rehab assignment, Schoop played six innings and finished the game 1-for-3.
Gunkel retired the first 14 batters of the game, but his perfect game was broken up by a solo home run from Jeremy Barfield in the fifth inning to tie the game 1-1.
Tom Murphy put the Rock Cats on top with a solo homer in the top of the seventh but the Baysox answered in the bottom of the same inning with another solo homer, this time from David Freitas to tie the game again at 2-2.
Reliever Ben Rowen came on to pitch for the Baysox in the 11th inning and gave up back-to-back walks to start the inning after not issuing a walk all season for the Baysox. Pat Valaika then doubled to score the first run of the inning and after an intentional walk to load the bases, Trevor Story hit a sacrifice fly to center field to put New Britain up 4-2.
Bowie wasn't finished as the Baysox mounted a comeback in the bottom of the 11th inning against New Britain closer Austin house for the come-from-behind victory. Mike Yastrzemski led off with a single and Freitas reached first on a fielding error by third baseman Jayson Langfels to move Yastrzemski to second. Corban Joseph hit a sacrifice bunt to move the runners up a base and Garabez Rosa singled to score Yastrzemski. Quincy Latimore hit another single to tie the game and Nathans, in just his second plate appearance for the Baysox, hit a walk off single to score Rosa and give the Baysox the 5-4 win.
Rowen (2-0, 2.36) ended up picking up the win for the Baysox after giving up the two go-ahead runs to New Britain. House (0-3, 3.81) took the blown save and loss for the Rock Cats as the Baysox won the third game of the series. Gunkel took a no decision in the start, throwing seven innings and allowing two runs on two hits while striking out six. Relievers Kenn Kasparek and Andrew Triggs combined to throw three scoreless innings.
Terry Doyle (6-1, 2.64) takes the mound in the series finale against Brett Marshall (0-2, 6.86) on Friday night at 6:35 p.m. at Prince George's Stadium.
