Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The RailRiders got a dominant effort from both sides of the plate in an 8-1 win over the Louisville Bats on Wednesday night at PNC Field.

PITCHING PROWESS: Starter Jordan Foley fired four-plus innings of one-run ball in his Triple-A debut. A 2014 draftee summoned up from Low-A for a fill-in nod, Foley gave up three hits, walked two and struck out three. Joel De La Cruz (5-0) followed with four perfect innings and James Pazos logged a 1-2-3 ninth. The trio combined to retired 22 of the last 23 Louisville sluggers including the final 15 in succession. De La Cruz is tied for the most wins on the team despite appearing in just nine games (two starts). Last night was his first SWB appearance since May 26. He had been pitching for Double-A Trenton.

THE HIT MAN: Ben Gamel enjoyed a 3-for-6 day a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. He leads the team with 25 multi-hit efforts on the year and has excelled since he assumed regular leadoff duties, hitting .325 in 17 such games.

WELCOME BACK: In his first game since June 10 at Buffalo, Tyler Austin went 2-for-3 with a pair of walks and two runs scored. Despite two weeks away from the game field, Austin extended his hitting streak to eight straight games including multiple hits in each of the last three. During his run, he has gone 11-for-28 (.393) to lift his average by 25 points (.208-.233). He enters tonight with his best contact clip since he ended game two of the April 25 doubleheader versus Pawtucket at .234.

STREAKING STROKE: Despite a nearly week-long layoff in the wake of being hit in the head with a fastball, Austin Romine has assembled an 11-game hitting streak. He has hit .378 (17-for-45) over his run with 12 RBIs. Four of his five home runs and 21 of his 29 RBIs have come on the road, but his 4-for-4 effort last night with a pair of doubles has lifted his home contact clip (.270) to within a point of his road number (.271). Romine has tied Rob Refsnyder's 11-game run from May 10-21 as the longest by a 2015 RailRider. Only Columbus' Jose Ramirez at 15 games owns a longer active hitting streak in the IL.

JUNE JUMP: Nick Noonan went 2-for-5 with two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored. In 16 games played this month, he has hit .383/.433/.550/.983. He ranks among the IL's best in June average (2nd), OBP (T-4th), SLG (T-5th) and OPS (3rd).

BOUNCING BACK: Rob Refsnyder entered last night in a 5-for-32 (.156) funk that dropped his contact clip to .268, the lowest it has been since he finished play at Charlotte on May 2 at .267. He reached base in all five plate appearances last night with a single, a bruise and three walks, boosting his OBP from .347-.358. He stole second and third in the sixth inning to become the first RailRider with multiple swipes in a game this season. No 2015 RailRider has been hit by pitch more often than Refsnyder (5).

ROAD WARRIORS: The RailRiders stand two games below .500 at PNC Field (19-21) and 14 games over on the road (24-10). The team has hit .281 on the road compared to a .261 mark at home. On the road, SWB has scored 178 runs in 34 games (5.2/game). At home, the squad has plated 155 runs in 40 games (3.9/game). The pitching has performed better at home (3.23 ERA) than on the road (3.45 ERA). No IL team has a better road winning percentage than the RailRiders (.706), who have won 17 of 20 away from PNC Field.

OFF THE RAILS: The RailRiders stand 12 games above .500 for the first time since the 2012 SWB Yankees won the division at 84-60...SWB owns an IL-best 17-6 record in June...The Bats walked 10 RailRiders to set a new season-high mark for walks drawn by SWB in a nine-inning game...The overall season-high number of 11 was set in the 15-inning clash with Lehigh Valley on April 20...Today, the RailRiders seek their fifth straight series win.
