Tacoma Rainiers News Release
TACOMA, Wash. -- A pair of late-inning stumbles handed the Tacoma Rainiers a 6-4 loss to the Reno Aces at Cheney Stadium on Wednesday night.
With the score knotted at 4-4, Rainiers reliever Mayckol Guiape served up a pair of two-out, bases-loaded walks to the Aces in the top of the ninth inning. Peter O'Brien collected the first free pass to give Reno the lead, and Garrett Weber drew the second to provide the insurance run.
The Rainiers initially held a 3-0 advantage through the game's first four innings. Third baseman Carlos Rivero hit a solo home run - his seventh of the season and third over his last three games - to give Tacoma 1-0 edge in the third. The lead grew to three thanks to the sacrifice fly hit by Leon Landry and a run scored by Justin Ruggiano on a wild pitch.
Reno erased their deficit and evened the score at 3-3 after posting a three-run inning in the fifth. Brandon Drury hit an RBI single and Jamie Romak hit a one-out, two-run double to tie game.
After catcher Oscar Hernandez used an RBI double to give the Aces a one-run edge in the sixth, the outfielder Landry locked the game at 4-4 with a one-out solo home run in the seventh. That score held until Reno walked their way to a second consecutive win in the ninth.
As a team, the Rainiers pieced together nine hits against the Aces. Landry and outfielder Stefen Romero led the charge with two-hit efforts. Chris Taylor's 1-for-4 performance included a double, upping the shortstop's season-high hitting streak to 12 games.
The right-hander Guaipe (0-4) was dealt the loss after surrendering two runs on one hit and two walks through 1.2 innings of work. Starter Sam Gaviglio surrendered three runs on five hits in a 4.1-inning effort. He walked three and struck out one in his 15th start this season.
The Rainiers (35-38) host the final game of a three-game series with Reno (33-39) at 7:05 p.m. tomorrow, June 25. The Rainiers have yet to name the team's starter in the contest. The Aces are slated to start right-hander Caleb Clay (4-5, 5.23).
