Eugene Emeralds News Release

EUGENE, Ore. - The Emeralds out-hit the Hawks on opening night but Boise pulled out the win, 4-2, on Tuesday evening at PK Park.

Outfielder Ian Happ, the Cubs' 2015 first-round pick, led the Emeralds, with two of their eight total hits plus a walk and a run scored. Shortstop and leadoff hitter Ho-young Son also had a pair of hits. Starter Adbert Alzolay (0-1) took the loss after allowing one unearned run on two hits in two innings. Logan Sawyer (1-0) earned the win for Boise, with two runs on seven hits in 6.2 innings plus 11 strikeouts.

Boise jumped on the board in the first when Carlos Herrera singled to start the game and later scored from third on a passed ball. The Hawks extended their lead with a three-run third. Max George doubled and scored on a single by Hamlet Marte. Later in the frame Kevin Padlo ripped a two-run single to left, scoring Marte and Brian Mundell, who reached on an error by the shortstop. That would prove to be enough for the Hawks.

The Emeralds got back a pair in the bottom of the fourth. Happ led off with a double and scored in the next at-bat when designated hitter Alberto Mineo doubled to left center. Mineo moved to third on a ground out and later scored on a sacrifice fly by second baseman Frandy De La Rosa. Eugene's best chance to even up the game was in the seventh, with runners at first and second and two outs, but a slow roller to second ended the threat.

Ems reliever Greyfer Eregua rebounded after allowing three runs (two earned) in the third to toss scoreless frames in the fourth, fifth and sixth. Boise had just one baserunner - a walk by Terry McClure in the sixth - during that stretch. He finished with seven strikeouts over four innings.

Notes: The Emeralds honored Cubs great Ernie Banks with a moment of silence and his No. 14 painted in centerfield before their first home game of the 2015 season...Adbert Alzolay was a late addition to the lineup at pitcher, replacing Greyfer Eregua...Eregua pitched in relief, coming in to start the third...The game was the first meeting between Boise and Eugene since the Cubs changed affiliates from the Hawks to the Cubs prior to the 2015 season.

Up Next: Carson Sands will start for the Emeralds Wednesday against Boise's Javier Palacios. Game time is 7:05 PM. It will be Olympics Night at PK Park plus the first 1,000 fans will receive schedule magnets. Kids eat free every Wednesday, sponsored by Carl's Jr. and Lone Pine Farms. Children under 12 will receive a voucher good for a free hot dog, apple and 12 ounce soda.
